Recorded during a string of concerts staged to commemorate John Zorn's 50th birthday, ELECTRIC MASADA captures the plugged-in variation of Zorn's acoustic, avant-Klezmer jazz quartet. Regular members Dave Douglas (trumpet) and Greg Cohen (bass) are absent here, with bassist Trevor Dunn admirably filling Cohen's position. Zorn's alternately lyrical and aggressive alto saxophone playing is still front and center, as are Joey Baron's dazzlingly polyrhythmic drum patterns. Rounding out the ensemble are guitarist Marc Ribot, keyboardist Jamie Saft, percussionists Kenny Wollesen and Cyro Baptista, and Ikue Mori on laptop electronics.
As one might guess from the personnel and instrumentation, the music here is dense, highly rhythmic, experimental, and often chaotic. The nearly 15-minute "Tekufah" is a cerebral, funky brew that recalls Miles Davis's early-1970s period (circa LIVE EVIL), with Saft's Rhodes creating a busy, cool counterbalance to Ribot's screaming guitar and the webs of thundering drums. Fred Frith and John Zorn had been making music together for 25 years when Zorn's 50th birthday rolled around, so how could that pairing NOT be one of the features of the monthlong celebration at Tonic in September of 2003? They got together for a series of improvised duets on September 15, and the results are stellar. Working together over such a long period of time and in various contexts, both players are intimately familiar with one another. The degree to which they listen to each other, react instantly, and match each other tonally at a moment's notice is truly astonishing and borders on telepathy. This eighth volume in the John Zorn 50th Birthday Celebration series on Tzadik is most of all a blowing session with a ton of surprises. Recorded impeccably during the monthlong series at Tonic in New York, this bunch appears in both duo and trio configurations and the sparks fly throughout. There are two sets of music contained here.
