| | This Is Ska And Reggae Roots CD
This three-disc set of Jamaican reggae and British ska is pretty a much hit-or-miss affair, with some amazing tracks mixed in with some not so amazing tracks, and unfortunately none of it is particularly essential, since pretty much everything here is easily available elsewhere. Among the obvious high points are a pair of Bob Marley classics, "Mr. Brown" and "Small Axe," Peter Tosh's "400 Years," the Specials' version of "Ghost Town," and Augustus Pablo's cool and quirky "Alive & Sounding" instrumental. But be careful. Pablo's track is found on disc three, which has its tracking seriously messed up, beginning with track seven, which is supposed to be Owen Gray's "Island in the Stream," but is actually Marley's "Fussing & Fighting" (which is supposed to be track 14, but isn't). Gray's song is track eight, with everything off by one track the rest of the way, until the disc ends with Lee "Scratch" Perry's "Huzza a Hana." Remember Augustus Pablo's "Alive & Sounding"? It's supposed to be the tenth track on the third disc, but is actually track 11. This is hardly an essential compilation in the first place, and with the tracking out of whack, it becomes even less essential. ~ Steve Leggett

Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour. Marley was extra special and a giant of popular music. Wallow in this vital record and listen to a man who had something to say and yet had fun while he said it. Most of the tracks you would want to be on the record are here, including the definitive version of 'No Woman No Cry' and a funky 'Lively Up Yourself'.
As the title implies, this is indeed Bob Marley & the Wailers captured in performance at the Lyceum Ballroom in London during the final U.K. leg of the Natty Dread tour. Passionate and symbiotic energies constantly cycle between the band and audience, the net result ...

This Is Ska And Reggae Roots CD music
$9.95 Maplewood is a low-key indie rock supergroup with members of Champale, Koester, Cub Country, and Nada Surf gathered together in the spirit of '70s canyon rock. Their self-titled debut brings back hazy memories of groups like America, Bread, and CSNY. The kind of groups who always seemed ready to break out their acoustic guitars and serenade the sweet hippie chicks around campfires and in hazy bars with heartfelt lead vocals and harmonies, ringing open-chord strumming, lazy tempos, and occasional pedal steel for added melancholy. There are also echoes of more modern bands like R.E.M. on "Darlene," Lambchop on "Bright Eyes," and Teenage Fanclub on the chiming "Morning Star." The spirit of Matthew Sweet also hovers over the proceedings, as he's ...
