Although the power metal revival movement of the '90s and 2000s has had some worthwhile American bands, the majority of participants have been from Western Europe -- some from Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, some from Great Britain, some from Italy and Spain, some from the Scandinavian countries. And one of the many Scandinavian power metal revival outfits is Sweden's Dragonland, who show no awareness of post-'80s metal trends on the proudly retro Starfall. Sweden, of course, had a ton of death metal/black metal activity in the '90s and early to mid-'00s, but there isn't a trace of death metal or black metal on Starfall; nor is there any alternative metal, rap-metal or metalcore influence on this disc. Although recorded in 2003 and 2004, Starfall is a total throwback to the old-school power metal of the '70s and '80s -- and this grandiose, elaborate effort (which is full of stereotypical dungeons-and-dragons lyrics) gets a great deal of inspiration from progressive rock as well. Dragonland's hard-rocking yet consistently melodic approach is best described as Iron Maiden, Queensr˙che, Savatage and Manowar by way of Rush, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer; this is a 2000s recording that sounds like it could have been made at least 20 years earlier. Dragonland isn't the least bit groundbreaking -- there are quite a few other European power metal revival acts that have been influenced by progressive rock and give the impression that they could enjoy Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime one minute and Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans the next. But even though Starfall isn't big on originality, the CD certainly deserves credit for craftsmanship and quality. And while Starfall isn't remarkable, it is an enjoyable (if derivative) effort that is worth hearing if one is a die-hard power metal enthusiast who also appreciates progressive rock. ~ Alex Henderson

Starfall album
$9.89 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual center, "Voodoo ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Starfall CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Starfall music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into ...

| | Hibria Defying The Rules CD (2005)
Starfall album
$12.95 Let's say, for the sake of argument, that a headbanger who knew a lot about metal (past and present) but was unfamiliar with Hibria was exposed to Defying the Rules during a blindfold test. Unable to identify Hibria, the headbanger was still asked to guess what year the CD was recorded -- and understandably, he or she would be likely to respond, "Probably around 1984 or 1985? Sometime in the early to mid-'80s perhaps?" Well, wrong answer, but certainly an understandable guess. Although recorded in 2004, Defying the Rules is an album that, stylistically, could have been recorded at least 20 years earlier. Hibria is part of the power metal revival movement; they recorded their first demo in 1997, but stylistically, these metalheads are a total throwback to the days when Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensr˙che, Helloween, and Ronnie James Dio reigned supreme. Their forceful yet consistently melodic work isn't the least bit groundbreaking, but then, a long list of artists in a variety of genres have provided worthwhile, enjoyable albums that weren't big on originality (jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco is a perfect example). The power metal revival movement, one could argue, is metal's equivalent of the Young Lion movement in jazz or the punk revival trend in punk -- it's a movement of headbangers who worship a previous era in their ...

| | Earl Hines Jazz Is His Old Lady And My Old Man CD (2003)
Starfall songs
$13.95 Earl Hines is joined by singer Marva Josie for this late-'70s studio date, though the album essentially features Josie more prominently than the leader. Hines became impressed upon meeting the singer and recorded with her on a number of sessions between 1970 and 1981, though she seems to have dropped from sight since Hines' death. Buck Clayton arranged the title track, which begins with a little humorous banter between the pianist and the vocalist. Josie's efforts are an acquired taste, as she drags a bit in "Just Squeeze Me," but swinging with authority in "'Deed I Do." The session takes a turn downhill with the limpid Burt Bacharach ballad "Make It Easy on Yourself" and the nauseating pop song "Feelings," with the musicians probably doing their best to keep from laughing aloud. The dance beat arrangement of "Candy" is little better. Tenor saxophonist Rudy Rutherford and alto saxophonist Tom Griffin (both of whom double on clarinet), trombonist Benny Morton and guitarist Skeeter Best are among the supporting musicians. This disc falls short of expectations so it can not be considered an essential acquisition by fans of Earl Hines; it is surprising that Acrobat bothered to reissue this deservedly obscure Catalyst ...
