Take the lyrical preoccupations of the Scissor Sisters, the overall glam rock homage sound of the Darkness (minus the singer's castrato wail), the Queers' devotion to punkily melodic hooks, and the sort of insouciant cock-of-the-walk attitude that was last seen in Marc Bolan's heyday, and what you'll end up with is fairly close to the Sex Slaves. The glam-punk New York City trio are unapologetically salacious -- the best song on the album is called "See You Naked" -- but their main interest is in the rock rather than the shock. It's instructive to note that the sole cover on the album is the Stooges' "Search and Destroy," and while obviously this version isn't a patch on the original, its inclusion reveals that the Sex Slaves come closer than most Iggy Pop fetishists to understanding the root of the great man's appeal: the most interesting moments aren't when everything is falling apart, they're when everything is just about to fall apart. The Sex Slaves stay on the right side of that point for nearly the entirety of Bite Your Tongue, and the results are good dirty fun. ~ Stewart Mason
N.Y.C. rockers the Sex Slaves are internationally know for their raucous live shows. Anything goes, whether it's girls dancing, stages collapsing or whiskey flowing. | | Chris Robinson Brothers Of A Feather: Live At The Roxy CD (2007)
Bite Your Tongue songs
$10.99 After a long hiatus that lasted for much of the first half of the 2000s, Chris and Rich Robinson started to reunite the Black Crowes in 2005, but before the full-fledged reunion really took flight, the siblings took off on a 2006 tour billed as Brothers of a Feather, releasing an album of the same name the following summer. Compiled of highlights from their three-night stint at the Roxy in Los Angeles, Brothers of a Feather does distinguish itself from the growing list of official live Black Crowes-related projects just by its intimate nature: hearing the brothers Robinson alone (it's not quite acoustic, since Rich often plays an otherwise unadorned electric) is unique and surprisingly revelatory, illustrating that both Chris and Rich can be sensitive interpreters when stripped down to the bone. But even if there are many soft, almost folky moments -- including a good cover of John Martyn's "Over the Hill," Rich's solo spotlight "Forgiven Song," and a winding version of "Driving Wheel" -- there's plenty of grit and good ...

| | Nick Cave Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! CD (2008) With Book
Bite Your Tongue CD music
$13.89 Nick Cave's 2008 album DIG, LAZARUS, DIG is a study in growing old gracefully, while still punching and kicking into that good night. Some might claim that Cave has irrevocably mellowed since his earlier days, yet one need only look to the arch, caustic musical leg-hump that was 2007's Grinderman album for evidence to the contrary. In fact, Cave's intensity hasn't lapsed in the least, it's merely evolved. DIG, LAZARUS, DIG, however, speaks to the artistry behind this evolution in attitude.
From the opening title track, the listener gets a complete picture of everything Nick Cave has been working toward as an artist. The song's biblical overtures are posited against allusions to modern hedonism and the price of vanity in a rapidly deteriorating culture. Cave is the embodiment of the sacred-profane binary, and "Lazarus" is his swaggering, four-minute skronk-funk opus. And while Cave is certainly running the show here, the Bad Seeds are also ...
