Kiran Ahluwalia was once a bond trader and is now a full-time musician with a fascinating and unusual mission: she writes and sings modern songs in the ghazal tradition -- one that originated in tenth century Persia and was transplanted to her native India in the 14th century. She also interprets traditional Punjabi folk songs, songs that form the basis of modern bhangra. But her influences range much farther than her native country's cultural traditions; Canada is her adopted home, and on this album she is accompanied by guest artists who include the acclaimed Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, whose playing adds a strange but lovely dimension to the beautiful "Jhanjra"; on that track, guitarist Rez Abbasi serves as a stylistic bridge between MacMaster's skirling Celtic lines and the more traditional percussion and sung melody, by playing Indian scales in a bluegrass-inflected, flatpicking style. For the most part, though, this album sounds less like an experiment in cross-cultural fusion than simply an honestly modern version of the ancient ghazal tradition -- its roots are firmly in the past, but jazzy chords and unusual instrumentation remind you that the music of this region is no more immune than any other to the effects of global communication. The album's highlight track is its final one, a gorgeous and contemplative number titled "Awara." Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | David Gilmore Ritualism CD (2001)
Kiran Ahluwalia CD music
$13.95 After years of sideman work with Steve Coleman, Don Byron, and many others, guitarist David Gilmore makes a bold and beautiful statement with his long-awaited solo debut, Ritualism. At the core of the project is a high-octane quartet, with Gilmore, George Colligan on piano and keyboards, Brad Jones on double bass, and Rodney Holmes on drums. The presence of guest horn players David Binney, Ravi Coltrane, and Ralph Alessi boosts the excitement level even further. Gilmore brandishes a rugged tone and delivers his lines with a sharp, staccato attack and an astonishing rhythmic fluidity. His writing is highly advanced and richly varied, and while his production aesthetic stresses the live immediacy of acoustic jazz, the tracks groove with a fusion-like ...

| | Larry Vuckovich Blue Balkan: Then & Now CD (2002)
Kiran Ahluwalia songs
$13.85 Pianist Larry Vuckovich revisits his landmark 1980 recording on this combined reissue and new release. Prefiguring the much-lauded work of Dave Douglas and the Tiny Bell Trio, guitarist Brad Shepik, and even John Zorn, the Yugoslavian-born Vuckovich combines the ethnic melodies and rhythms from his native Balkans with modal jazz. Never as avant-garde as his contemporaries, Vuckovich nonetheless pushes the boundaries of both jazz and folk styles. The original tracks featured the brilliant vibe playing of Bobby Hutcherson, who unfortunately does not reprise his role on the four new pieces. Nonetheless, with the adroit violinist Eric Golub returning and the capable hands of Tommy Kesecker replacing Hutcherson on marimba, the new tracks on Blue Balkan are superb additions that set this album securely in a modern context. Taken as a whole, these are angular, cubist, post-bop compositions reminiscent of late-'60s McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane. The gypsy-style melodies, authentically believable on their own, work effortlessly with the modal underpinning of Vuckovich's writing, making for an edgy and often incendiary listen. A forgotten connection to world ...
| | Joe Tex Happy Soul/Buying A Book CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Kiran Ahluwalia album
$17.39 Two Joe Tex albums from 1969 are combined onto this single-disc reissue, with the addition of both sides of a 1968 single. Happy Soul, the earlier of the pair, is one of many extremely super-loose soul concept albums of the 1960s, the inference here being that this is upbeat, good-natured, humorous soul. Actually it doesn't sound much different from Tex's usual late-'60s output, but it is short on the churchy deep soul ballads that usually occupied a large part of his repertoire and heavy on the happy, sometimes almost slightly zany songs. It's good soul-funk-pop, naturally short on songs that are as good as the greatest hits, but with some real good 'uns, like the ebullient rap-dance tune "Chicken Crazy," "You Need Me Baby" (with Tex dissing a hometown boy-done-good as not good enough for the woman he wants), and the frenetic "Go Home and Do It." The ballads aren't entirely neglected, either, particularly on the slow and sweet "You Can Tell" and the inspirational "Keep the One You Got." Buying a Book isn't as upbeat, but maintains a similar level of respectable-to-high quality, and has a more balanced assortment of the gospel-influenced stompers ("We Can't Sit Down Now"), novelty humor ("It Ain't Sanitary"), slow organ-graced ballads with spoken monologues ("That's the Way," "Buying a Book"), and dance funk with hot guitar/brass/organ interplay ("Get Your Lies Together"). Tex, incidentally, wrote all of the songs on both albums, a somewhat unusual feat for soul stars of the time. The bonus tracks, both sides of the 1968 single "Betwixt and Between"/"Chocolate Cherry," are actually instrumentals by Tex's ...
