(1 Customer Review)
Recorded in Columbia Recording Studios, New York, New York in 1961. Includes liner notes by Stacey Williams and Robert Shelton.
The first album from the greatest musical poet of the 20th century gave little indication of what was to come. Although released in 1962, it reeks of the 50s folk/protest movement. Many of the standards covered by Dylan had been sung by a thousand troubadours throughout the McCarthy era and the anti-war movement. Dylan sings like an innocent angel, and makes Eric Von Schmidt's lusty "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" sound sweet. The seeds of greatness were apparent in the sensitive original "Song To Woody," a sadly overlooked entry in the massive Dylan catalogue. A wonderful exercise in what was then and what is not now.

Bob Dylan
$13.65 Retreating from the psychedelia of THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, the Stones released the roots-rock single "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and then the album BEGGAR'S BANQUET. It was hailed as a rock masterpiece, and remains the favorite of many Stones fans.
BEGGAR'S BANQUET played to the Stones' strengths. The ironic lead-off ("Sympathy For The Devil") led many rock-baiters to conclude that singer Mick Jagger actually was the devil, or at least a satanic follower. Many of the other tracks, particularly the hit "Street Fighting Man," highlighted the solid rhythm section interplay of Wyman and Watts, while Jones contributed a typically down-home slide guitar part to "No Expectations," and the writing team of Richards and Jagger summoned up images of their deep blues roots.
Remastered reissue of 1968 album, suitable for standard & 'Super Audio' CD players. Digipak.
Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England.
The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums).
| | Rolling Stones 12 X 5 CD (1964)
Bob Dylan
$10.39 12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around and Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a la his hero Little Walter.
The downbeat, Arthur Alexanderish "Congratulations" is an effective expression of romantic melancholy, complete with acoustic guitar solo. The slide guitar chords on "Grown Up Wrong" echo another early blues influence, Elmore James. The milestones on this album are two R&B covers to which the Stones take more than a rote approach, "It's All Over Now" and the majestic "Time Is On My Side," which they make completely their own.
Remastered reissue of 1964 album, suitable for standard & 'Super Audio' CD players. Digipak. Abkco. 2002.
Includes the original release liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham.
Audio Remasterers: Jon Astley; Bob Ludwig; Steve Rosenthal; Teri Landi; Paschal Byrne.
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums).
| | Rolling Stones Let It Bleed CD (1969)
Bob Dylan
$13.55 The last Stones studio album of the '60s finds the band, for perhaps the first time, accurately reflecting the spirit of its age. The erstwhile bad boy outsiders of rock now found themselves firmly in the center of the social and political post-'68 whirlwind, and faced up to the challenge magnificently. The band's confident climb to its artistic peak was begun by BEGGAR'S BANQUET, but LET IT BLEED is a quantum leap even from that musical milestone.
The album's opener, "Gimme Shelter," with its insinuating guitar introduction, leads us decisively out of Flower Power and into a world where rape and murder are "just a shot away," and the Devil of BANQUET is very much alive and taking names. There's a nod to seminal influence Robert Johnson, whose "Love in Vain" is a mandolin-accompanied highlight. The climax arrives in the form of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," bearing references to the fallout of the Swinging London era. LET IT BLEED finds the Stones brimming with musical confidence and artistic inspiration.
Remastered reissue of 1969 album, suitable for standard & 'Super Audio' CD players.
Audio Remasterers: Jon Astley; Teri Landi; Steve Rosenthal; Paschal Byrne.
The Rolling Stones: Mick Taylor (guitars); Keith Richards (acoustic guitar); Mick Jagger (harp); Bill Wyman (autoharp); Charlie Watts (drums); Brian Jones (percussion).

| | Bob Dylan Times They Are A-Changin' CD (1964) Remastered
Bob Dylan
$6.79 On his third album, Bob Dylan both redefined and expanded his musical palette. Feted as a protest singer, a definition he rejected, he brought new insight to the genre, particularly with "Only A Pawn In Their Game," in which he paints a wider canvas relating to the murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Dylan's love songs herein are particularly poignant, their stark acoustic setting enhancing a graphic lyricism. The title song boasts a wonderful ambiguity, managing to be both political and personal, the latter aspect suggesting the changes Dylan would bring to his music. His last album as a folk artist per se, THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' is yet another essential Dylan collection.
Recorded at Columbia Recording Studio, New York, New York in August -October 1963.
Solo performer: Bob Dylan (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica).
Engineers include: Stan Tonkel, George Kneurr, Peter Dauria.
| | No Direction Home Soundtrack - Bootleg Series 7 No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 CDs (2005)
Bob Dylan
$15.99 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young Woody Guthrie acolyte (a rare version of Guthrie's signature tune "This Land is Your Land") to his own protest songs (Town Hall, NYC performances of "Masters of War" and "Blowin' in the Wind").
It's Disc Two where things really kick into overdrive; having made the leap from folk balladry to surreal word paintings, we hear Dylan developing musically by leaping into electric rock & roll. It's an undeniable thrill to hear the sacred texts of HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED and BLONDE ON BLONDE anew via the alternate takes included here, with modified lyrics and rhythmic inflections. NO DIRECTION HOME manages to provide hardcore Dylan fans with fresh meat while simultaneously chronicling the high points and songwriting milestones of this visionary artist's first several years of work.

Bob Dylan
$10.19 The fourth album of this fine Toronto-area group, the brainchild of Jose Contreras, is a blueprint for how to make effective, feel-good rock & roll. Despite the fact music and lyrical content could be deemed to be eco-friendly at times, it still manages to take all the aspects of classic rock and fuse them into an instantly lovable whole. One of the highlights is "Hugger of Trees," a keyboard- and percussion-led song in the same vein as the Who in their heyday. The raunchy rock of "Supernatural" or the infectious riffs in "Stella Heart Ocean" engulf the senses and are unrelenting in their hum-ability. If there is any fault with the album, it could be "Kick This Bummer," which seems to stagnate in the middle and travels into a Neil Young culmination. Add to this the ballad-like songs which bookend the album and you find yourself with a trendless, timeless classic rock and pop album. ~ Jason MacNeil
Canada's great hope for pop nirvana has garnered raves from critics and their peers as well. The music is described as alternatingly moody, melodic, groovy and capaphonous.
