Leftist revolutionary Bruno (Lucas Belvaux), escapes from prison to the streets of Grenoble in an attempt to settle some old scores after serving fifteen years for an act of terrorism. While he is doggedly pursued by Pascal (Gilbert Melki), a troubled cop, Bruno finds that his old causes and methods of fighting for them are no longer valid. After finding that his former lover (Catherine Frot) is married and no longer a part of their old organization, he seeks refuge at the mountain retreat of Cecile (Ornella Muti), a close friend of Agnes (Dominique Blanc), Pascal's heroin-addicted wife.
This noir-ish thriller is the first film in director Lucas Belvaux's Trilogy which consists of three works featuring the same characters (the others are AN AMAZING COUPLE, a comedy, and AFTER THE LIFE, a drama). ON THE RUN eschews any outright action in favor of the dramatic emotional clashing of its tormented characters. Bare and raw, with long silent passages and only a minimal score, writer/director/star Belvaux gives us an antihero with few redeeming qualities and surrounds him with characters who are only slightly more virtuous. As with the other two films in the Trilogy, ON THE RUN succeeds on its own, but its virtues and depth are revealed in the other two works. | | Red Persimmons
On the Run review
Like a series of still-life photographs combining painterly lighting, soft penetrating colors, and perfect composition, RED PERSIMMONS is a meditative film that explores the art, craft, and centuries-old traditions of Japan's persimmon-drying industry. Director Ogawa Shinsuke is greeted with open arms as he visits various farms where families make a living off of their persimmon trees, interviewing farmers. The farmers are proud of what they do, and they are anxious to share their knowledge and background about the persimmon business. The persimmon trees grow tall--much taller than the apple trees that Americans typically grow in their orchards--and these farmers climb the trees to reap their harvest in the fall. Striking mountain vistas colored in the oranges and browns of autumn are the backdrop for shots of the persimmon trees, showing the Earthy simplicity of an industry dependent on nature. Farms located on hilltops benefit from wind, direct sunlight, and arid conditions--perfect for growing large persimmons and even more useful in drying them--while farms located in the valley risk rotting and blackening of the fruit due to morning mist and unpredictable weather. Once the harvest comes in, peeling and ...
| | Bunuel and King Solomon's Table
On the Run DVD
BUÑUEL AND KING SOLOMON'S TABLE is director Carlos Saura's fond and whimsical tribute to his old friend, Luis Buñuel. Instead of making a biography of Buñuel, which Saura felt would not be true to Buñuel's spirit, Saura imagines Buñuel (Gran Wyoming) being proposed a film idea by producer David Goldman (Jean-Claude Carrière, who co-wrote THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISE, THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY, and THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE with Buñuel). The script is about a search through Toledo for the legendary table of King Solomon. The table possesses a magically mirrored top that reflects back the past, present, and future (just as Saura's film does, in a sense). Buñuel imagines his younger self (Pere Arquillué) and his friends, Federico Garcia Lorca (Adriá Collado) and Salvador Dali (Ernesto Alterio) transported into modern times ...
| | Saltwater
On the Run movie DVD
Conor McPherson's SALTWATER is a moving slice-of-life film that focuses on a family living in a small coastal town in Ireland. George (Brian Cox) is an aging man who runs a tiny fish and chips shop, bringing in just enough money to break even. His sons, shy, introverted Frank (Peter McDonald) and innocent, adolescent Joe (Laurence Kinlan), help out as grill cooks, but George has accumulated some debt in his dealings with a double-crossing scum bag banker. Meanwhile, the oldest son, Ray (Conor Mullen), makes a decent living as a philosophy teacher at a local university, but the combination of his outspoken opinions and his love affair with one of his students are quickly digging him into a hole. As the family works together to help each other with the challenges of their daily lives, a beautiful, difficult, realistic story unfolds. Shot in dramatic color with a jumpy, ...

Antonio Capuano's invigorating Mafia drama documents the Shakespearean-like crumbling of a powerful Italian crime family. The Cammaranos have reigned supreme for several generations under the guidance of Tony, bullying law enforcement officials and businessmen alike. But when Amerigo, Tony's son-in-law and second in command, loses his favorite daughter as a consequence of his dangerous profession, he sets his sights on a higher goal. Belittled by his wife, Irene (Tony's daughter), and hated by his surviving children--daughter Orsolo, and son Oreste--Amerigo performs the brutal act necessary to take control of the family. But it turns out Amerigo isn't the only one with aspirations of power. Tony's son, Ignazio, and grandson, Libero, aren't happy that Amerigo has coasted into the hot seat based on his marriage to Irene. Soon, a series of tragic events are unleashed, reducing the number of living Cammaranos and slowly destroying the family in the process. Capauano ...
| | Dog's Day
On the Run film
A DOG'S DAY is a darkly comic political satire, keenly critiquing the impact of globalization on the poorest communities of India. Like Murali Nair's acclaimed first feature, THRONE OF DEATH, about an innocent farmer who becomes a national hero when he's the first man scheduled to be executed in the "electronic chair" that India has bought with a World Bank loan, A DOG'S DAY uses a compelling allegory to make its point. The trouble starts when a local lord (K. Krishna Kaimal) grants independence to one of his rural provinces, allowing their democratically elected leader, Janakan (Sudhas Thayat) to take over, and granting a former servant couple, Koran (Thomas V.) and Kurumpa (Lakshmi Raman) possession of his treasured dog (who appears on the lord's flag), Apu. Koran and Kurumpa are proud of their new "royal" guest, and the villagers crowd to see Apu wherever he goes. But when Apu bites ...

| | Kit Kittredge: An American Girl DVD (2008) Full Frame; Widescreen
On the Run movie DVD
$7.89 A favorite from the American Girl historical doll collection, Kit Kittredge makes her big-screen debut with this feature. Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) brings the doll to life and lights up the story's Depression-era setting with her precocious charm. Kit is aware that the Great Depression is under way, but she feels lucky it hasn't directly touched her. While other people in the country struggle to find work and food, the 10-year-old plays comfortably in her tree house and writes articles she hopes will be published by the Cincinnati Register. But everything changes when Kit's dad (Chris O'Donnell) loses his job, forcing Kit and her mother (Julia Ormond) to turn their home into a boarding house while he goes to Chicago in search of work. As a colorful assortment of characters fill Kit's home, Kit learns how to be resourceful. When she gets to know a pair of child hobos, she realizes how kind and friendly homeless people can be. With her journalistic mind in overdrive, she sets out to clear their name in print, dispelling rumor with hard fact and a child's fresh perspective. But when her house is burglarized and all fingers point to her trusted new friends, Kit doesn't know where to turn. Will her investigative skills be able to save her family from the poorhouse? Only time will tell. KIT KITTREDGE offers something for young viewers and adults alike, and boasts an all-star cast (including Stanley Tucci, Jane Krakowski, and Joan Cusack) in addition to its likable young star. Little girls and American Girl fans should ...
