Writer-director Jamie Thraves's feature-film debut follows the day-to-day life of Frank (Aidan Gillen), a single London artist in his late twenties who works as a prop maker along with his quirky friends, Mike (Dean Lennox Kelly) and John (Tobias Menzies). Aware that he needs to jump-start his easygoing life, Frank considers moving out of the flat he shares with his depressed roommate, Terry (Rupert Proctor). While looking for a new place, he meets Ruby (Kate Ashfield), a spritely young real estate agent. As Frank's relationship with Ruby develops, his life, work, and friendships all begin to change.
Focusing more on atmosphere than plot, Thraves's excellent first feature is almost documentarylike in its realism but still allows for strikingly artistic flourishes, evoking the work of filmmakers such as John Cassavetes, François Truffaut, and Jean-Luc Godard. Intentionally ambiguous at times, the film remarkably captures the confusion of postgraduate life. Perfectly cast and well acted, THE LOW DOWN is carried by Gillen's quietly engaging performance. Songs by PJ Harvey and the Human League accompany the subtle cinematic score by Nick Currie (aka Momus) and Fred Thomas. Low Down Reviews: "...Remarkable....Refreshing....Mr. Thraves lets his camera, and his talented, vanity-free cast lead the way..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...A movie like THE LOW DOWN gets better the more attention you pay..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "[H]is un-British style then is loose but classy..."
-- Robert McTaggart, Uncut

This collection of zany comic shorts is split between live action films and animation pieces. SAVING RYAN'S PRIVATES is a one gag parody, with the contrast between the soaring score and the silly antics providing far more humor value than the endless synonyms for male genitalia. In BOY NEXT DOOR, a teenage ...

Low Down video
$7.89 A favorite from the American Girl historical doll collection, Kit Kittredge makes her big-screen debut with this feature. Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) brings the doll to life and lights up the story's Depression-era setting with her precocious charm. Kit is aware that the Great Depression is under way, but she feels lucky it hasn't directly touched her. While other people in the country struggle to find work and food, the 10-year-old plays comfortably in her tree house and writes articles she hopes will be published by the Cincinnati Register. But everything changes when Kit's dad (Chris O'Donnell) loses his job, forcing Kit and her mother (Julia Ormond) to turn their home into a boarding house while he goes to Chicago in search of work. As a colorful assortment of characters fill Kit's home, Kit learns how to be resourceful. When she gets to know a pair of child hobos, she realizes how kind and friendly homeless ...

$13.55 First-time director Deb Hagan teams up with first-time screenwriters Dan Callahan and Adam Ellison in the gross-out comedy COLLEGE. Kevin (Drake Bell), Carter (Andrew Caldwell), and Morris (Kevin Covais) are three nerdy high school seniors who need some adventure in their life. After Gina (Alona Tal) breaks up with Kevin, the trio decides to have a wild weekend at Fieldmont University, where Kevin and Morris are planning on going to college in the fall--Morris on an academic scholarship. When their preassigned dorm room is not ready for them for reasons best left unsaid, they turn instead to one of the fraternities, where a cousin of Carter's was a member, hoping to be treated as legacies. Low Down review
$15.05 Writer/director Joshua Michael Stern (NEVERWAS) tackles American politics in his second feature film. Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner) is just your below-average Joe. He works in an egg factory, likes to knock back a few too many beers, and is a single parent to 12-year old Molly (Madeline Carroll), a bright spitfire who does her best to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. Patriotic Molly insists that apathetic Bud do his civic duty and vote in the upcoming presidential election, a tight race between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic candidate Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). Soon the media and both candidates descend upon Bud's hometown of Texico, New Mexico, when it's determined that his vote wasn't counted and will decide the outcome of the entire presidential election. Now that Bud is a "somebody"--there's even a "Bud Cam" capturing his every move--will he be swayed by visits to Air Force One and the "Bud Ball" held in his honor, or will he be the voice ...

$29.19 Based on a pair of effervescent novels by Sophie Kinsella, CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC is a light and bubbly confection that should appeal to those who can identify with its heroine's passion. Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher, WEDDING CRASHERS) has a label-filled wardrobe that any fashionista would covet, but she also has credit card debt to match. She craves a job at the Vogue-like Alette, but a position at a financial magazine at the same publishing company may be her ticket in. Despite her painfully low credit rating, Becky starts dishing out advice on saving, while debt collector Derek Smeath (character actor Robert Stanton) is hot on her Louboutin heels. Meanwhile, she is competing for the affections of her charming boss, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy, THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB), with icy Alette employee Alicia Billington (Leslie Bibb, IRON MAN).
A well-heeled hybrid of SEX AND THE CITY and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, SHOPAHOLIC features the talents of Patricia Field, costume designer for those two films. The clothes are almost on an equal footing with the actors here, and each well-chosen piece in ...

Low Down movie DVD
$9.05 Best known for his horror classics RE-ANIMATOR (1985), FROM BEYOND (1986), and DOLLS (1987), director Stuart Gordon turned to character-driven thrillers in the early 2000s with KING OF THE ANTS (2003) and EDMOND (2005). STUCK continues in that vein, exploring humankind's potential for cruelty toward one another. Inspired by real events, this is a bloody and disturbing revenge film with a pitch-black sense of humor and a handful of fine performances. Tom Bardo (Stephen Rea) is having a bad Friday. He's out of work and preparing for an interview at the employment agency when he is suddenly evicted from apartment. A computer glitch then causes him to spend the entire day waiting for his interview, then is turned away. With nowhere left to go, he finds himself sleeping on a park bench, only to be rousted by a cop. Enter Brandi (Mena Suvari), a corn-rowed nursing assistant heading home after a night of partying. Talking on the phone and driving under the influence, Brandi hits Tom, sending him crashing halfway ...
