THE BALLAD OF LUCY WHIPPLE is an entertaining, star-studded CBS adaptation of the best-selling children's novel by Karen Cushman. Set during the height of the 1880s Gold Rush, this colorful depiction of one family's move to the West, fraught with hardship and colorful adventures, stars Glenn Close as Arvella Whipple, a widowed mother who decides to move her family from Massachusetts to the dusty depots of California. Jena Malone stars as Arvella's oldest daughter, California Morning Whipple, an intellectual 12-year-old who detests the idea of moving to California so much that she changes her name from California to Lucy, a prim and proper New England name. The Whipples make their home in Lucky Diggins, a rough and rowdy mining town full of characters seeking to make their fortune. Arvella and her family run the local boarding tent, where they cross paths with a bawdy woman of the night (Chloe Webb), a cowboy poet (Meat Loaf Aday), and a sensitive missionary (Bruce McGill) who quickly falls for Arvella. Despite the constant adventures of life in the West, Lucy dreams of cultured society life in New England, where she could attend a proper school and read books at the library. But when Lucy is faced with making a choice between Lucky and life on her own in the East, she makes a decision that suprises everyone, even herself. Glenn Close and Jena Malone give powerful performances as two women, young and old, thoroughly changed by the pioneer spirit of the wild West in this charming tale reminiscent of the classic LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. $14.69 The struggle to achieve resident alien status, or gain full-blown citizenship in the United States, provides some thought-provoking material in this feature from director Wayne Kramer(THE COOLER). CROSSING OVER is an ensemble piece that contains many overlapping storylines, most of which revolve around Max Brogan (Harrison Ford), a law enforcement official who specializes in arresting people who break stringent immigration laws. Joining Ford is Ray Liotta, who plays a corrupt immigration official who forces a wannabe Australian actress (Alice Eve) to sleep with him in exchange for a green card. The film also focuses on the rigorous guidelines laid down in post-9/11 America, with Kramer detailing the shocking maltreatment of a teenage girl who faces deportation after giving a misguided high school presentation on terrorism. These tales, and several others, all combine to ...

$13.59 Most romantic couples--onscreen or otherwise--would kill for the type of chemistry that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler share in the gyno-centric comedy BABY MAMA, even though the women are only playing friends. Fey stars as Kate, a 37-year-old vice president at an organic foods company whose womb starts a-kickin' every time she sees a baby. Though her career has kept her from marriage and children, she has decided that it's time for her to get pregnant. But multiple tries with in vitro fertilization leave her disappointed, and Kate turns to a surrogate mother. Enter Angie (Poehler), a high-school dropout desperate for the large check that comes with carrying someone's child. Though she agrees to be Kate's surrogate, it's clear that the women disagree on everything from music to the type of food Angie should be eating. When Angie leaves her apartment after a fight with her obnoxious common-law husband (Dax Shepard, EMPLOYEE ...

$19.55 In 1956, Albert Lamorisse made THE RED BALLOON, a short in which a young boy, played by his son, makes friends with a red balloon. Some 50 years later, Taiwanese auteur Hou Hsiao Hsien has made his first French-language film, the charming and subtle FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON, commissioned by the Musée d'Orsay and inspired by Lamorisse's children's classic. A blonde Juliette Binoche stars as Suzanne, a single mother living in Paris, doing her best to raise her seven-year-old son, Simon (Simon Iteanu), while preparing her latest puppet show, based on the Yuan Dynasty story of Zhang Yu and his beloved, Qiong Lian. Suzanne hires Song (Song Fang), a Taiwanese film student, to come to Paris to take care of Simon. Song goes everywhere with her camera, filming everything she sees. Meanwhile, Simon is being followed by a red balloon that has grown attached ...

$13.55 Palpable heat, complete with sweltering lens flares, washes over the mental and emotional currents of writer-director Jonathan Levine's THE WACKNESS. As the summer months of 1994 pass in three naturally marked acts, the neon pop of a pained youth culture's graffiti art punctuates Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's New York City and its palette of washed-out darks and midtones. This part-familiar, part-engagingly new coming-of-age story ...
