Mississippi native Charles Burnett directs this quirky romantic comedy starring James Earl Jones as Fish, a retired Jamaican janitor who has spent the last ten years of his life in and out of mental institutions. Although he is still haunted by an inner demon, whom he believes embodies pure evil, Fish lives in a ramshackle boarding house in Los Angeles run by a warmhearted and eccentric widow (Margot Kidder in a boldly unrecognizable performance). His neighbor, Poinsettia (Lynn Redgrave) is a lonely woman who has given up real romance for an imaginary love affair with the long-dead opera star Puccini. One day, Fish finds Poinsettia drunk on the stairs of their boarding house and takes her into his room to recuperate. The two misfits, who have chosen to live within their own imaginary worlds, are shocked to find each other in the land of the living and begin a friendship that soon evolves into a tender and sometimes humorous romance. Together they must weather a set of unique challenges: imaginary devils, interracial dating, and long-dormant sexuality. This enchanting glimpse into the hearts and minds of two troubled souls who find each other in the twilight of their lives is driven by the honest and unflinching performances of James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave who shine together on screen. A madcap spoof of the classic Hollywood Western, BLAZING SADDLES is also one of the most gleefully anti-P.C. films ever produced by a major studio. Enlisting the help of the sensitive town drunk (Gene Wilder), formerly the Waco Kid, Bart embarks on a plan to save Rock Ridge. A scathing spoof that deals with racism, sexism, and bodily functions, BLAZING SADDLES offers a contrast between picture and words that is shocking, subversive, and hilarious. Director Mel Brooks makes two memorable appearances--as both the sleazy governor and a Yiddish-speaking Sioux Indian chief--while Madeline Kahn does a sidesplitting Marlene Dietrich imitation as the town floozy. As its explicit title suggests, Kevin Smith's ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO is a foul-mouthed and filthy film that probably isn't fit for the very young, the very old, or the easily offended. But for those who enjoy Smith's brand of humor, this raunchy but romantic comedy could be the perfect date movie (though perhaps not for a first date). With mountains of past-due bills piling up, Zack (Seth Rogen, KNOCKED UP) and his roommate/childhood friend Miri (Elizabeth Banks, SCRUBS) aren't sure how they're going to stay in their Pittsburgh apartment. But a chance encounter at their 10-year reunion gives them the idea to make a porn movie. When it comes time for the friends to do the deed, they realize that perhaps they're more than just friends.
With all the talk of sexual positions and bodily functions, it'd be easy to say that Smith is hopping on the Judd Apatow bandwagon that has dominated the box office in the latter half of the aughts with KNOCKED UP and THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, and ZACK AND MIRI even features a few Apatow alumni. In reflecting upon his time spent in the Israeli army, filmmaker Ari Folman has produced WALTZ WITH BASHIR, a profoundly moving antiwar meditation that is equal parts personal memoir, history lesson, and animated fever dream. In 1982, Folman was a soldier during Israel's first invasion of Lebanon. This was a painful moment in history, when the newly elected president of Lebanon, Bashir Gemayel, was killed in an explosion. Furious, his party, the Christian Phalangists, retaliated by storming into the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and massacring thousands of innocent victims. Over 20 years later, Folman is disturbed to realize that he has no memory of this incident even though he was there at the time.
