Filmmaker Bruce Weber, whose last feature-length documentary was the award-winning LET'S GET LOST in 1988 (about jazz great Chet Baker), returns with this fascinating look at his life and career. Starting off as a film about model Peter Johnson, whom Weber snatched from a high school wrestling team and turned into a star for Ralph Lauren and other fashionistas, CHOP SUEY is a tasty mix of vintage color and black-and-white footage, still photos of everyone from Alfed Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe to Montgomery Clift and Clark Gable, and insightful narration by Weber and Johnson about modeling, family, and the cult of celebrity. The film goes all over the place, but every side adventure is a worthy one. Teri Shepherd, manager and longtime partner of nightclub favorite Frances Faye, shares endearing stories of their exciting relationship; wrestler Rickson Gracie and surfer Christian Fletcher discuss what it was like becoming (homoerotic) sex symbols as seen through Weber's lens; aging explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger and his book ARABIAN SANDS are featured; and former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland allows Weber in to shoot her fabulously tacky apartment. Other highlights include Robert Mitchum singing a duet with Dr. John and Weber talking about working with Jan Michael Vincent.

3 stars A Gorgeous Mess
I saw "Chop Suey" at the San Francisco Film Festival years ago, and I've been waiting for it on DVD ever since. I don't know that it ever had a theatrical release. It's a very personal cinema record of obsessions, private and public(given his high profile), many of which I share, e.g. Robert Mitchum, Frances Faye, with entertaining footage and provocative images, accompanied by a wonderful selection of music.

Startling, provocative, and often unsettling, midnight movies have left an indelible mark on American cinema. Beginning in the 1970s, these late-night cult events offered films that were unlike anything else glimpsed on movie screens. Among the offbeat hits are some of cinema's most unique works. This fascinating documentary explores six midnight movies and their impact: John Water's trashy classic PINK FLAMINGOS; David Lynch's surreal take on fatherhood, ERASERHEAD; cinema's preeminent transvestite musical, ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW; Alejandro Jodorowsky's otherworldly ...

Justifiable Homicide

Chop Suey DVD
Theatrical Release - Not Yet Available For Purchase
JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE, directed by Jonathan Stack and Jon Osman, is an intense and pointed documentary that explores the high incidence of police brutality in New York City in the mid-to-late 1990s under the administration of Mayor Rudolf Giuliani. The film centers on the deaths of two teenage Puerto Rican boys, Antonio Rosario and Hilton Vega, who were shot and killed by police officers during a conflict in the Bronx. Although the police report called it "justifiable homicide," independent investigations by pathologists, the Civil Complaint Review Board (CCRB), and an eye witness revealed that the boys were shot multiple times, in the back, as they were lying face-down on the floor of an apartment, unarmed. When Margarita Rosario (the mother of Antonio and aunt of Hilton Vega) formed a group called Parents Against Police Brutality, throngs of troubled people came forward with their stories of unfair police treatment resulting in deaths of young men from minority groups. From there, the ...

Subtitled "The Untold Story of the Rise of Genghis Khan," director Sergei Bodrov's sweeping MONGOL focuses on battles physical and emotional as it follows the early ascent of the "Great King" in the 12th and 13th centuries. Born Temudgin to a kingly father, the film introduces the nine-year-old Temudgin (Odnyam Odsuren) making his first fateful decision: going against his father's wishes and choosing the lesser-born Borte as his future wife. When his father is poisoned, Temudgin flees from his father's rivals. Temudgin is saved by a young prince, Jamukha, and the two become blood brothers. That bond of friendship is tested, though, when the grown Temudgin (Tadanobu Asano) wages war--against the Mongol code--to win back the captive Borte. As Temudgin asserts his own power, he must also face Jamukha in all-out battle if he is to secure the safety of his family and his own kingly destiny. Gorgeously shot on location in Kazakhstan and Inner Mongolia, MONGOL represents the first in a proposed trilogy of films that will chronicle the full impact of Genghis Khan's reign. ...
Angels & Demons
Angels & Demons DVD  (2009) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled

Dan Brown’s novels are packed with fascinating historical tidbits which he ingeniously twists into plots that are so intricate and complex that there is a constant need to inform the reader with exposition, often leaving little room for character development. There is a bit of this stilted quality to ANGELS AND DEMONS, the second of Brown’s novels to be brought to the big screen by the tandem of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but more than enough intense action to keep the eyes of the audience as busy as their minds. The details of the plot are as diabolical as any in Hollywood history: after the pope’s death, a nefarious organization stashes an antimatter bomb somewhere in the Vatican, threatening to annihilate the conclave of cardinals who are meeting to elect the papal successor. To pass the time until the bomb will detonate, the enemy begins to torture and kill a few of the individual cardinals, but there is a pattern to the grotesque executions, involving hidden sculptural symbols and secret architectural clues. Unfortunately for the church, the man most capable of deciphering the code is the American "symbologist" Robert Langdon (Hanks), who happens to be an affirmed atheist. The script is filled with amazing details about the centuries-old conflict between the church and the Illuminati (whose members included Galileo, Michelangelo, and Bernini), which Hanks uncovers as he breathlessly races between various ...

Alice's House

Chop Suey DVD
Theatrical Release - Not Yet Available For Purchase
Brazilian documentary filmmaker Chico Teixeira brings a refreshingly natural touch to ALICE'S HOUSE, a working class drama about personal and family betrayal. Forty-ish manicurist Alice (Carla Ribas) works long hours at the beauty parlor, only to return to a cramped Sao Paulo apartment she inhabits with her brutish husband Lindomar (Zecarlos Machado), three disrespectful sons, and her ailing mother. Struggling daily against such densely packed machismo, Alice is blind to the secrets simmering beneath her family's mundane existence. This includes her eldest son turning tricks with older men and her husband's affairs with teenage girls. Alice is soon drawn into her own web of infidelity by the reappearance of an old high school flame. As truths finally boil to the surface Alice must choose between a painful new reality and her desperate romantic hopes. Unlike the urban violence of recent Brazilian successes (CITY OF GOD, BUS 174), ALICE'S HOUSE is a quietly moving, warts-and-all ...
