Chronicling the life and work of the great Russian filmmaker Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein from 1921 through his death in 1948, this detailed, artistic film portrays a frenzied artist with strong political views rivaled only by an even stronger will to create beautiful films. Eisenstein, portrayed by a deft Simon McBurney as a wild-haired, wide-eyed, exuberantly passionate man, is a former Red Army engineer drinking in the revolutionary spirit of post-Lenin Moscow in 1922. He becomes a student of the influential theater director Vsevolod Meyerhold (Jonathan Hyde) and furiously sketches the costumes for a film he is writing, quickly gaining a reputation among his avant-garde artist friends as a genius. When he receives a commission to make a film about the 1905 revolution, Eisenstein is shown tossing an orange back and forth with his friend (and possible lover), Grisha (Raymond Coulthard) as he envisions the Odessa Steps sequence of his monumental 1925 film THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, which catapulted him to the forefront of filmmaking. Later, Eisenstein achieved Hollywood fame, signing a contract with Paramount, then returning to Russia after attempting an unfinished project in Mexico. EISENSTEIN paints a portrait of a man who was loved his country, but hated fascism. He stifled his political views and his creative impulses to avoid government persecution. He betrayed his homosexuality in a marriage of appearances to friend and journalist Pera (Jacqueline McKenzie). But in the end he used his art--tremendous films like IVAN THE TERRIBLE and ALEXANDER NEVSKY--to both salute and criticize Russia. Grisha is a nickname for filmmaker Grigori Alexandrov.

$21.43 Dan Brown’s novels are packed with fascinating historical tidbits which he ingeniously twists into plots that are so intricate and complex that there is a constant need to inform the reader with exposition, often leaving little room for character development. There is a bit of this stilted quality to ANGELS AND DEMONS, the second of Brown’s novels to be brought to the big screen by the tandem of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but more than enough intense action to keep the eyes of the audience as busy as their minds. The details of the plot are as diabolical as any in Hollywood history: after the pope’s death, a nefarious organization stashes an antimatter bomb somewhere in the Vatican, threatening to annihilate the conclave of cardinals who are meeting to elect the papal successor. To pass the time until the bomb will detonate, the enemy begins to torture and kill a few of the individual cardinals, but there is a pattern to the grotesque executions, involving hidden sculptural symbols and secret architectural clues. Unfortunately for the church, ...

Eisenstein review
$11.79 Writer-director Quentin Tarantino revisits the seedier side of Los Angeles--following 1992's RESERVOIR DOGS--with this funny, violent, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the less "classic" side of filmmaking--the potboilers and capers, the Blaxploitation flicks and gangster movies. The film interweaves three tales, told in a circular, fractured manner, which only fully connect by the time the final credits roll. The first story focuses on Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), two hit men on duty for "the big boss," Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), whose gorgeous wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), takes a liking to Vincent. In the second, a down-and-out pugilist (Bruce Willis), who is ordered to take a fall, decides that there's more money in doing the opposite. The final chapter follows a pair of lovers (Amanda Plummer and Tim Roth) as they prepare to hold up a diner.

$10.05 This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. ...
| | Murphy's Romance DVD (1985) Widescreen
Eisenstein movie DVD
$5.69 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes ...

$15.19 DEFIANCE is a different kind of World War II movie, one that looks at the Holocaust from a unique angle--telling the true story of a group of Jews in Eastern Europe who fought back. On the run from the Germans and the local police, the three Russian Bielski brothers--Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), and Asael (Jamie Bell)--hide out deep in the forest. Their numbers swell as more and more refugees join them, coming together to form a community while also patrolling with guns and shooting the enemy to stay alive. But Tuvia and Zus have a falling-out over what future direction to take: Tuvia thinks it best to remain in the forest despite the coming vicious winter, but Zus wants to join the Russian resistance, which is aggressively attacking the Nazis. Complicating the situation are the women in their lives, known as forest wives--Lilka (Alexa Davalos) shows interest in Tuvia, Bella (Iben Hjelje) grows close to Zus, and young Chaya (Mia Wasikowska) and Asael flirt with the tingles of first love. As food grows scarce, diseases increase, ...
