In this crime comedy, British director John Duigan sets in motion a fantastically silly string of events, all stemming from an inept but otherwise innocent parole officer (Steve Coogan) being accused of murder by a group of bad cops. To clear his name, the parole officer must actually commit a robbery to get the evidence that proves he didn't kill anybody. $5.75 Kelsey Grammar plays a wayward Navy officer, Tom Dodge, who is notorious throughout the Navy for having responded to a close call involving a Russian submarine by getting drunk and tattooing "welcome aboard" on an unmentionable appendage. He gets assigned by Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) to command his own submarine; unfortunately, this sub is a rusting 1958 diesel model that the Navy wants to engage in war games to find out if it could inflict any damage. The assumption is, this sub is comparable to those the Russians are selling to renegade Iraqi and Libyan commanders, who might use them on suicide missions against the US.
Once on board, we meet the cast of quirky characters who will man this clunker, including a hyper, mutinous Rob Schneider as ...

Parole Officer review
$11.35 Kevin Hart riffs on marriage, kids, and the dangers of dating in this hilarious stand-up concert, and still has energy left over to take himself to task for being short. The host of BET's COMIC VIEW: ONE MIC STAND, Hart cracks jokes and tells stories with forceful enthusiasm and brutal, hysterical honesty.
He electrifies the audience with a clever, animated style of comedy that cannot be duplicated and brings his audience to tears in this stand-up performance. He's hilarious as he pokes fun at everybody, but he's funniest when he's the brunt of the jokes! Fans who know him as the congenial host ...

$14.45 THE PHILADELPHIA STORY boasts an incredible cast, but it's Katharine Hepburn's picture in more ways than one. Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a Philadelphia heiress, is about to marry coal-company executive George Kittridge (John Howard). The wedding, promising to be the season's premier event, attracts the attention of magazine publisher Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), who sees it as an opportunity to break a story. Spy magazine's Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), Lord's ex-husband, is enlisted to "gain access" to the party, along with top scandal writer Macauley Connor (James Stewart, in an Oscar-winning role). However, the reporter is quickly smitten by the bride's charms--and he's not the only one. The film, based on the play by Phillip Barry, was first a Broadway sensation starring Hepburn, who acquired the screen rights, claimed the starring role, and chose the director, screenwriter, and lead cast. In addition to fine work by Grant and Stewart, notable supporting performances ...

Parole Officer film
Michel Blanc's adaptation of Joseph Connolly's novel SUMMER THINGS/VACANCES ANGLAISES romps through scene after scene of riotous romantic upheaval and treachery. The story follows two eccentric families on vacation together in Touquet, France. One family, however, is privately bankrupt and can only afford a trailer on the outskirts of town. Casual infidelity and small deceits are the norm, as almost each character, young and old, becomes involved in a summer tryst. Class issues figure widely throughout the film, pressurizing relationships to their breaking point, and even driving one of the characters to suicide. Poignant moments of real loneliness complement the silly madness of sex and love, and become the motivation for utter debauchery. Unexpected attractions between disparate characters reinvent the bourgeoisie, or bringing true desire to the surface. As the vacation comes to a close, everyone either seems more resolved about their lives and loves, or driven to new extremes of psychosis, long past help. An incredible ensemble ...

| | Annihilation of Fish
Parole Officer DVD
Mississippi native Charles Burnett directs this quirky romantic comedy starring James Earl Jones as Fish, a retired Jamaican janitor who has spent the last ten years of his life in and out of mental institutions. Although he is still haunted by an inner demon, whom he believes embodies pure evil, Fish lives in a ramshackle boarding house in Los Angeles run by a warmhearted and eccentric widow (Margot Kidder in a boldly unrecognizable performance). His neighbor, Poinsettia (Lynn Redgrave) is a lonely woman who has given up real romance for an imaginary love affair with the long-dead opera star Puccini. One day, Fish finds Poinsettia drunk on the stairs of their boarding house and takes her into his room to recuperate. The two misfits, who have chosen to live within their own imaginary worlds, are shocked to find each other in the land of the living and begin a friendship that soon evolves into a tender and sometimes humorous romance. Together they must weather a set of unique challenges: imaginary devils, interracial dating, and long-dormant sexuality. This enchanting glimpse into the hearts and minds of two troubled souls who find each other in the ...

RUSSIAN DOLL, the sophomore directorial effort of director and cowriter Stavros Kazantzidis (TRUE LOVE AND CHAOS) is a wacky romantic comedy about the difficulties of finding a faithful lover. Harvey (Hugo Weaving), a dismal, hard-drinking Sydney private detective who earns his living chronicling marital infidelities, has his world turned upside down when he discovers that his girlfriend is cheating on him. Harvey's best friends, Ethan (David Wenham) and Miriam (Rebecca Frith), urge him to move on, offering their own apparently perfect marriage as proof that true love exists. Ethan, however, is having an affair with a high-spirited Russian mail-order bride, Katia (Natalia Novikova), who found her husband dead when she arrived ...

Parole Officer video
$15.19 Like many holiday films, THIS CHRISTMAS mines the ample humor and drama of a family Christmas. Ma'Dere (Loretta Devine) is the matriarch to the large and loving Whitfield family, which consists of her three daughters--Kelli (Sharon Leal), Lisa (Regina King), and Mel (Lauren London)--and her sons--Michael (Chris Brown), Claude (Columbus Short), and Quentin (Idris Elba). They are an extremely attractive and successful bunch, but no sooner have they shared their first meal together than the hidden tensions begin to boil to the surface. Long-kept secrets come tumbling out, and the Whitfields soon engender enough drama to support several spin-off soap operas. There's interracial marriage, infidelity, gambling debts, an AWOL soldier, and repressed dreams of musical stardom, to name just a few of the issues they are forced to tackle in between stuffing the turkey and decorating the tree. Will their many problems and misunderstandings be resolved by Christmas day? Since this is a family holiday flick, the odds are, of course, quite good.
Despite the often heavy subject matter, the film has the glow and sheen of a lighthearted romantic comedy. The characters may be awash in drama, but they contend with their troubles in impeccable wardrobes and settings, so that even the barroom brawls have an almost cozy look to them. While some might feel the packed storyline was in more need of trimming than the tree, the tidy ending makes for perfect feel-good holiday fare. ...
