PUNKS is a lively romantic comedy about four gay black friends living in contemporary LA. Hill (Dwight Ewell) is in a long-term relationship, which ends abruptly at his thirtieth birthday party, when he finds his French boyfriend making out with another man. Dante (Renoly Santiago) is a rich party boy who lives with his parents, and has a freewheeling sex-and-drugs lifestyle. Chris (Jazzmun) is a diva, a drag performer whose group, The Sisters, performs Sister Sledge songs with elaborate costumes and sharp choreography. The Sisters are threatening to split up over Chris' inability to share the stage. At the heart of the story is Marcus (Seth Gilliam of OZ), a successful photographer who is too shy to approach the men he finds attractive. He is stuck longingly snapping their photos from a distance. When the handsome, friendly Darby (Rockmund Dunbar) moves in across the street, Marcus is disappointed to find out he is straight, and he has trouble getting over his attraction. Writer-director Patrick-Ian Polk obviously knows his milieu, and loves these characters. The frank conversations of the four friends are exuberantly raunchy at times, but they are also funny and true-to-life, and in the end, the film's tale of friendship and romance is touching. Punks Reviews: "...Admirable for its candor, its good humor and its bravery..."

$23.39 THE PROPOSAL could have been a strictly script-by-numbers affair, but hilarious performances by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds improve this romantic comedy. Publishing powerhouse Margaret Tate (Bullock, TWO WEEKS NOTICE) is used to getting her way. She bullies her ambitious assistant, Andrew Paxton (Reynolds, DEFINITELY, MAYBE), earning the ire of all the underlings at Colden Books in New York City. But Margaret, a native Canadian, finds her career in jeopardy when she is denied a visa and learns she will be sent northward. She forces Andrew to become her fiancé, but she’ll have to take a trip home to Alaska with him to prove to U.S. Immigration that their impending union is genuine.
What ensues is a combination of GREEN CARD, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, and GREEN ACRES, with the hell-in-heels boss trying to fake a romance with her assistant as she struggles to survive as a city girl in the country. However, THE PROPOSAL proves to be more than the sum of its parts; Bullock has been ...

| | Stalin's Wife
Punks review
Nadezhda Alliluyev may not be a name that is easily recognizable to everyone. Even those who know she was the wife of former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin have encountered great difficulty in gleaning any concrete information from the myriad ambiguities that surround this historical figure. Director Slava Tsukerman, whose eccentric 1982 sci-fi film LIQUID SKY is a cult favorite, examines Alliluyev's inscrutable life in STALIN'S WIFE. With precious little information to work with, Tsukerman's task proves to be an arduous one, but he manages to produce an engaging documentary nonetheless. Many former associates and family members of the Stalin clan are interviewed at length, while the director offers an interesting array of photographs and newsreel footage to help explain Alliluyev's ...

Punks DVD
INSIDE THE OSMONDS tells the remarkable tale of an amazing family. From their early television appearances through to their emergence as a pop-rock phenomenon in the 1970s, the film then takes viewers through the Osmonds' years as producers and performers on the Donnie & Marie Show, and finally into their financial ruin in the '80s. Between the stage performances, behind the scenes look at family dynamics, and brief montages of historical events, this made-for-television movie is highly entertaining. Produced by Jimmy Osmond, the youngest of the brothers, the film appears to whitewash ...

In this bizarrely minimalist film, synthetic blood test-subject Bernard (Kevin Barnes) waits in a suburban motel room between injections, trying to earn enough money to realize his dream of traveling to Egypt. Unfortunately, the synthetic blood in his veins may cause him to go insane before he can get there. Diversion and friendship arrives in the form of a cheerful hotel maid named Helen (Jill Carnes) who takes him out for evenings of bingo and karaoke. Perhaps even that amount of stimulation is too much, as Bernard endures long nightmares ...

Comedian Ray Romano found himself with a hit TV show on his hands after EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND first aired in 1996. Unaccustomed to life in the spotlight after years spent finely honing his craft before meager audiences, Romano returns to his roots--the stand-up comedy circuit--in 95 MILES TO GO. Essentially, the film resembles a behind-the-scenes DVD extra extended ...
