Danny Huston delivers a staggeringly heartbreaking performance as a highly successful yet tragically doomed Hollywood agent in IVANS XTC. An adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's THE DEATH OF IVAN ILYICH, Bernard Rose's drama relocates the original story to the fast-paced, cutthroat world of Hollywood, where debauchery and work go hand in hand. Ivan Beckman (Huston) lives life in the fast lane as a cocaine addict and a womanizer, yet nevertheless he continues to thrive as a successful talent agent. But when his coworkers discover that he has passed away unexpectedly, Ivan's honor is put to the test. Most people who knew him suspect that the hospital's claim that he died of lung cancer is just a cover-up for something darker. But as the film returns in flashbacks to the days leading up to Ivan's demise, the truth is gradually revealed. As Ivan uses his cunning to sign superstar Don West (Peter Weller), he discovers that he is, in fact, dying from lung cancer. Rather than share this information with friends and family, he withdraws further into himself, continuing to party at a breakneck pace, hoping that his misfortune will simply go away. Shot on digital video, Rose's film is a moving meditation on death and Hollywood. ivans xtc. Reviews: "...Huston's multi-dimensional portrayal lures you in like a beckoning ghostly finger as the story unfolds..."-- Dwayne E. Leslie, Box Office "...Mr. Rose's updating works surprisingly well....The movie avoids any easy moralism, which makes it sadder, more troubling and also, strangely, funnier than it might have been..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...Huston is splendid..."
-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "...Danny Huston gives an eloquent, searing performance..."
-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life "...The film is a showcase for the effects that can be achieved digitally, with a distinctive look that is strikingly different from celluloid....A very good movie..."
-- Kim Newman, Sight and Sound "...A searing portrait of Hollywood in the fast lane, deeply felt, clearly seen, acted with great effect by Huston..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

$21.45 THE NOTEBOOK's Nick Cassavetes directs another tearjerking literary adaptation with this drama based on Jodi Picoult's novel. Cameron Diaz takes a detour from comedy to play Sara, the domineering mother of Kate (Sofia Vassilieva, MEDIUM), a young girl with cancer. Sara’s other daughter, 11-year-old Anna (Abigail Breslin), was conceived just to serve as a donor for her sick sister. On the outskirts of the family are father Brian (Jason ...

$6.55 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in ...

$15.19 Those who were waiting for the romantic reunion of TITANIC's Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet may be surprised by what they find in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. The movie begins with a sweet scene where Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) meet at a party, but the rest of this drama based on Richard Yates's novel is devoted to watching the destruction of their marriage and their selves in 1950s suburbia. Frank works at a job he hates in New York City, then commutes home to two children and a wife who feels none of them belong in their cookie-cutter town. Their realtor (a fine Kathy Bates) recognizes their specialness and introduces them to her mentally unstable son (BUG's Michael Shannon, in another good, unhinged performance) in an effort to establish some normalcy for the man. However, Frank and April's marriage is not as perfect as it seems to the outside world, and the audience gets to witness their downfall.
With its commentary on conformity and finding identity, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD bears more than a passing resemblance in both theme and ...

ivans xtc. movie DVD
$23.45 TRAITOR is writer/director Jeffrey Nachmanoff's powerful rumination on post-9/11 foreign affairs wrapped up into a taut contemporary spy thriller. Balancing the film's sometimes conflicted ideological heft is Don Cheadle, who turns in a smartly even-keeled performance as Samir Horn, a Sudanese-born, Chicago-raised former U.S. Army Special Forces operative. The action begins with a jarring prologue set in Sudan in 1978, where the young Samir witnesses the murder of his father by car bombing. Jumping swiftly to present day Yemen, Samir, in a dramatically ironic twist, is revealed as a mercenary selling explosives to Muslim extremists. But what is never completely clear throughout TRAITOR's numerous plot-twists is just where Horn's allegiances ...
