John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary ...

Behind the Badge review
Eighteen-year-old Nola (Emmy Rossum) has finally had it with her drug-addicted Mom and violent stepfather. She catches the first bus out of Kansas and arrives on the mean streets of New York City with nothing left but a dream of a new life for herself and to find her real father, a man she knows nothing about except that his name is Hutch. After her first night curled up on a boulder in Central Park, Nola lands a waitressing job in an East Village luncheonette. She is befriended by handsome Ben the cook (James Badge Dale), who is working toward a law degree at night. Ben casually suggests that Nola can stay on his couch, and though she grudgingly accepts the offer, she can't help but second-guess his intentions. On the job, Nola meets the owner, Margaret (Mary McDonnell), who is also a real estate agent, and the proud owner of a profitable escort service. Margaret is so genuinely taken with Nola that she offers her a purely administrative job as her assistant, as well as an outrageously well-appointed ...

$10.75 A group of surrealist artists and writers gather to discuss sex in this Alan Rudolph ensemble film, loosely based on Jose Pierre's actual 1928-1932 Paris study. Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney star as stenographers hired to both transcribe the sessions and act as muses for the male subjects. Alan Cumming, Elliot Davies, Terence Howard, and Til Schweizer play some of the artists present, who delve into topics like bestiality, onanism, and menage-a-trois. Their leader, Edgar (Dermot Mulroney), is in love with a female demon that haunts his dreams, much to the annoyance of his flesh-and-blood girlfriend (Julie Delpy). Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld give the film's best performances as Edgar's boozy, sex-crazed sponsors. The characters gather in a modern art-filled room and an orgy practically ensues as they find themselves liberated by the erotically transgressive talk and surroundings. The script by Rudolph and Michael Henry Wilson utilizes the actual session transcriptions to create an overflow of poetic, insightful dialogue. Another of Rudolph's signature explorations of jazz-age love and artistic camaraderie (see also THE MODERNS and DOROTHY PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE), it's set in 1924 Cambridge, Mass, but filmed in Berlin.
This film screened as part of the Film Comment Selects series organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

$13.59 Nicholas Stoller's FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL is a romantic disaster comedy produced by the same team that made such hits as THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP, headed by writer, director, and producer Judd Apatow. When he gets suddenly and unceremoniously dumped by his longtime girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (VERONICA MARS lead Kristen Bell), composer Peter Bretter (FREAKS AND GEEKS alum Jason Segel) is devastated. Miserably depressed, he seeks solace in tawdry one-night stands, but he is desperate to win Sarah back. On the advice of his stepbrother, Brian (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Bill Hader), Peter heads off to Hawaii for a much-needed vacation, but he gets even more freaked out when he discovers that Sarah and her new beau, wild and wacky British singing sensation Aldous Snow (comedian Russell Brand), are staying there as well. Mired in sadness, Peter is befriended by hotel employee Rachel Jansen (THAT '70S SHOW's Mila Kunis), who encourages him to get back his life and pursue his own dreams, which include staging a Dracula musical with puppets. But Peter is blinded by his desire for Sarah even as he grows closer to Rachel and starts ...
