Nobuhiro Suwa's H-STORY playfully blurs the line between drama and documentary as it examines the impact of history (both world history and cinema history) on contemporary lives. Suwa plays himself as a filmmaker struggling to remake Alain Resnais' classic, HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR. He's hired Beatrice Dalle (BETTY BLUE) and Hiroaki Umano to play the parts originally played by Emmanuelle Riva and Eiji Okada. But Dalle is having problems with the original script (by Marguerite Duras). The camera constantly catches her complaining to her co-star, and eventually to the director (through a translator) about how the dialogue is "too poetic," and about Suwa's insistence that she repeat the same gestures over and over. As they attempt to recreate one scene, she keeps forgetting her lines. "I'm talking so much crap that I'm lost," she complains. Frustrated, she leaves the set with a visiting writer (Kou Machida) and explores the city. The sound continually drops out of the film, there are light flashes, and the dialogue sounds completely improvised, giving the illusion that these are outtakes from an aborted film project. Suwa's work is a canny and thought-provoking journey into one filmmaker's complex and fascinating morass.
This is the only Kuo Machida video. Stars also making their debut in this video: Motoko Suhama, Nobuhiro Suwa, Hiroaki Umano. $10.75 The Dominican Republic has beautiful beaches, beautiful people, and a little something called "Sanky Panky," which female tourists might want to stay away from. In this musical comedy starring the charismatic Fausto Mata, his attempts at getting foreign woman to fall in love with him in order to procure a visa to the United States have hilarious results. A huge hit in both the Dominican Republic and the Dominican communities abroad, SANKY PANKY is a humorous look at the little-known phenomena of seducing travelers for personal gain. H-Story review
Swedish director Björne Runge directs a splendid cast in this dark drama about the destructive nature of dishonesty and betrayal. Over a fateful 24-hour period in a dreary Swedish town, three separate storylines unwind, united at times by loose connections among characters, and at other times, only by theme. Anita has been consumed by bitter rage ever since her husband left her three years earlier for a younger woman. A toxic presence to all those around her, Anita decides to take matters into her own hands, seeking revenge on her ex-husband and his new wife. Over the course of a dinner party with friends, Dr. Rickard and his wife watch their lives crumble around them, as new meaning is given to the word "betrayal." Anders is a workaholic bricklayer who doesn't understand the importance of spending time with his family until the bizarre requests of his newest clients force him ...
| | God's Children
H-Story DVD
GOD'S CHILDREN is a wrenching documentary about the residents of Payatas, one of the largest garbage dumps in the world, just outside the city of Manila. Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Shinomiya explored this hellish place in an earlier documentary, SCAVENGER: FORGOTTEN CHILDREN, and returned for this follow-up nearly a decade later. Before the film even has a chance to introduce the struggling families that are its focus, subtitles inform the audience that the area was ravaged by monsoons. Subsequently, one of the two gigantic mountains of garbage that comprise the dump collapses, burying up to a thousand people in their ...

A festive outdoor wedding replete with a raucous medical-oriented fashion show (picture chic nurses waving giant syringes and doctors stylishly flaunting their white lab coats) is just one of the joyous events arranged by the wonderful, charismatic group living at a hospice for terminally ill cancer patients. Dmitri (Jacques Dutronc) is the newest arrival, a man in his late forties who looks far too young to die. With ...

$15.25 As the first African American to receive college football's prestigious Heisman trophy, Ernie Davis (Rob Brown) is one of the most inspiring--and tragic--figures in the game (he died of leukemia at 23, before his first NFL game) His rise to athletic stardom coincides with the birth of the civil rights movement, and despite setbacks like a speech impediment, biased referees, and fear of white mob reprisals, Davis grabs the glory for a better America. Dennis Quaid plays Davis's coach and mentor, Ben Schwartzwalder, who lays on the discipline and training, first yielding to racist pressures, then supporting and spurring Davis to his peerless heights for Syracuse University's Orangemen. THE EXPRESS would need to work hard to fumble this ball, and it doesn't, making a smooth cinematic touchdown with heart, intelligence, guts, rapid-fire editing, and a minimum of cliché. The gridiron action is vividly and excitingly rendered as is a superb supporting cast, most notably Omar Benson Miller as Davis's wisecracking teammate. Plus, ...

Vibrantly entertaining, the Bollywood musical AAJA NACHLE brings the beloved award-winning Hindi actress Madhuri Dixit (DEVDAS) back to the big screen after a prolonged hiatus. Dixit portrays dance instructor Dia, who lives in New York City. She fled there as a young woman to marry an American-- a decision that forced her parents to leave their traditional Indian town in shame. Now, still estranged from her family and raising an adolescent daughter on her own, Dia is called back to her home town when she finds out an old mentor is near death. Upon her return she is devastated by the ...

H-Story DVD
In A GIRL CUT IN TWO, Gabrielle Snow (Ludivine Sagnier) has an enviable choice: between two rich, handsome men who desire her. But in this thriller from prolific French director Claude Chabrol (MERCI POUR LE CHOCOLAT), the decision isn't an easy one, and the results are far from romantic. Gabrielle meets the distinguished, married writer Charles Saint-Denis (François Berléand, THE TRANSPORTER) and is immediately captivated. At the same time, she encounters a spoiled heir, Paul (Benoît Magimel, THE PIANO TEACHER), who is equally taken with her. Gabrielle bounces between the two men until she finally makes a choice. ...

$23.45 A direct descendent of classic haunted-house films like BURNT OFFERINGS (1975) and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979), THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT also features the classic premise of a family moving into a new home where the bad deeds of previous tenants have left a foul psychic residue. Reportedly based on true events experienced by the Snedeker family in the 1970s, Peter Cornwell’s film has plenty of effective scares, but it is also a moving family drama featuring an impressive performance by Virginia Madsen (SIDEWAYS).
It is 1987, and Connecticut teenager Matt Campbell (Kyle Gallner) is undergoing painful, experimental cancer treatments. Long drives to the hospital are making a trying experience even worse, so his mother, Sara (Madsen), rents an old house and moves the family closer to Matt’s clinic. ...
