Acclaimed author Roddy Doyle teams up with first-time feature director Kieron J. Walsh for WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY, a charming romantic comedy about an unlikely relationship that forms between a Dublin schoolteacher and a free-spirited woman with a hidden profession. Brendan (Peter McDonald) spends his off hours watching old movies and singing in a local choir. One night, he meets Trudy (Flora Montgomery) in a pub, and they agree to meet at the cinema later that week. When Trudy stands Brendan up, he tracks her down; surprisingly, a serious relationship develops. Things take a turn for the strange and bizarre when Brendan begins to suspect Trudy's nocturnal adventures might have to do with a series of violent castrations that have struck the city. Confronting her, he instead learns that Trudy is a professional burglar, which shocks him into even greater confusion. After convincing him to help her rob his sister's house, Brendan finds himself falling quite easily into a life of crime. A final daring heist of the new computers at Brendan's school finally brings the happy days to an end, but this does not dampen the film's persistently cheerful tone. Doyle's unpredictable script, combined with a bouncy pop soundtrack, makes Walsh's big-screen debut a lighthearted, engaging affair. Theatrical Release: March 9, 2001 (NY)
WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY was shown at the 2000 London and Toronto film festivals and at the 2001 3rd Annual Irish International Film Festival in New York. When Brendan Met Trudy Reviews: "...[A] light, charming, teasing romantic comedy....The movie luxuriates in cinema references while laughing at its own fetishes -- a neat talent..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "...A gleeful comic anthology of cinematic jokes and references....A safe, sweet outlaw fantasy....[The film] has enough frisky energy to kick up some adrenaline..."
-- Stephen Holden, New York Times "...Unmistakably Doyle, an infectiously acerbic romantic comedy with liberal doses of pop culture and media satire thrown in for good measure..."
-- Wade Major, Box Office "...Pauline McLynn gives a well judged performance..."
-- Edward Lawrenson, Sight and Sound "...WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY is a plucky comic valentine for those who love the movies..."
-- Jan Stuart, Los Angeles Times "...It has that unwound Roddy Doyle humor; the laughs don't hit you over the head, but tickle you behind the knee. And there is, as usual, Doyle's great pleasure in kidding the Irish..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

When Brendan Met Trudy movie DVD
While shooting Lars von Trier's controversial comedy THE IDIOTS, cinematographer Jesper Jargil kept the digital video camera running and turned it on von Trier himself. The result is THE HUMILIATED, a painfully honest portrait of an artist who suffers from mood swings, depression, and intense feelings of loneliness. The first film shot within the constraints of the groundbreaking Dogme 95 manifesto, THE IDIOTS follows a group of frustrated individuals who share a house together and torment society by acting mentally and physically disabled in public. While shooting the film, von Trier has moments of lighthearted pleasure (shooting one ...

When Brendan Met Trudy video
A dreamlike tale of finding one's purpose in the mundanity of suburban New Jersey, TOO MUCH SLEEP is a unique independent film which combines elements of crime drama with a journey narrative. Perpetually tired, he often finds himself nodding off at inappropriate times, and, when awake, wanders around in an almost somnambulistic state. One morning however, the unregistered gun ...

When Brendan Met Trudy DVD
$15.15 Toby Young's scathing roman à clef about his stint working for Vanity Fair is rather loosely adapted for the screen in this film of the same name. Young briefly worked for the high-profile magazine in the mid-1990s, and upon his dismissal he penned a snarky memoir that went on to become a major bestseller. Now, in the film version, we have Simon Pegg as Sidney Young, a cocky journalist who is hired by editor Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges) to work for Sharps magazine. Sidney arrives in New York with grand plans to expose the ridiculousness of modern celebrity culture, but Harding forces him to work on puff pieces with fellow writer Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst). Sidney refuses to adapt to the glitzy magazine world, and is ostracized for his offensive, sloppy behavior. He and Alison--a frustrated novelist at heart--trade barbs and bond over their terrible jobs, slowly developing a quirky camaraderie. Things take a turn when Sidney meets Sophie Maes (Megan Fox), an ambitious starlet. He becomes determined to get Sophie into bed, no matter the cost, and after several madcap incidences involving crushed Chihuahuas and transsexuals, he finds himself suddenly sucked into the flashy world of Sharps. In danger of losing himself completely, he tries to figure out what it is he really wants, ...
