Filmed in the Dogme 95 style, TRULY HUMAN from Danish director Ake Sandgren is a fantasy film that defies and challenges our accepted understanding of existential laws. We know, for instance, that children sometimes create imaginary friends who are simply made up, not real, and not really there--definitely not human. But in TRULY HUMAN, a 6-year-old girl, Lisa (Clara Nepper Winther), not only talks to her imaginary big brother, P, who she says lives behind the wallpaper, but P can see out. Lisa is alive, filmed in vivid color. P, who may or may not be alive, strains to see Lisa in blurry black and white. Even more shocking than realizing that P can see--and is watching--is when she gives him life, and tells him to be a real human being. When Lisa's house is demolished, P surfaces from the rubble, a living man in his late teens, with behavior that falls somewhere between a feral child and an alien visitor. The only thing P (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), who calls himself Ahmed, knows of the world are Lisa's parents, Walter (Peter Mygind) and Charlotte (Susan A. Olsen). Struggling to find his way, P undergoes a rapid introduction to Danish society that is comic, abusive, and above all, very strange.
This film was included in the 31st New Directors/New Films 2002 series presented by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Department of Film and Media of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Truly Human review
Michel Blanc's adaptation of Joseph Connolly's novel SUMMER THINGS/VACANCES ANGLAISES romps through scene after scene of riotous romantic upheaval and treachery. The story follows two eccentric families on vacation together in Touquet, France. One family, however, is privately bankrupt and can only afford a trailer on the outskirts of town. Casual infidelity and small deceits are the norm, as almost each character, young and old, becomes involved in a summer tryst. Class issues figure widely throughout the film, pressurizing relationships to their breaking point, and even driving one of the characters to ...

A respected theater director with bloated self importance gathers a cast and crew to mount his latest stage production. The intention of the piece is to reflect the truth of contemporary life. The rehearsal process instead sprouts a secular world based on power plays of both a sexual and professional nature. These games are also seen with their interactions with the outside world, particularly regarding economic disparity. Economic conflicts occur when the snobbish actors and crew members slight the homeless and the suffering and when the director seeks a grant for his work ...

Truly Human movie DVD
TIRANA YEAR ZERO, from Albanian director Fatmir Koçi, achieves an intriguing and poignant balance between war torn, crime-riddled life in the rundown city of Tirana, and the beautiful people who live there, struggling to make the best of it. The film centers on Niku (Nevin Meçaj), a young man who lives with his parents in a dilapidated apartment complex. His mother nags him with disjointed critiques ("Your father shaves better than you do!") that could not possibly amount to useful advice. His father is in bed, sick and dying. The best thing Niku has going for him is a slow-moving, but operational truck. The truck enables Niku to perform various odd jobs transporting things--a mound of clay for a sculptor, a Stalin statue for a film director, a discarded cement war bunker for a German tourist--and in turn have a way to structure his days, which are otherwise meandering and directionless. His beautiful, smart, resourceful girlfriend, Klara (Ermela Teli), wants to move to Paris and be a model. But something, maybe her love for Niku or maybe fear, holds her back. In a desperate ...

Starring Stefano Accorsi (THE SON'S ROOM), this film is about two vivacious, directionless, unemployed, passionate young men who share a spacious bachelor pad in Turin, Italy. Andrea (Accorsi) tries his best at countless job interviews, all of which are hilarious failures, and falls in love with a stunningly beautiful actress, Dolores (Anita Caprioli). His scruffy roommate Bart (Libero de Rienzo), a supposed literary critic who never works, keeps their hectic twentysomething lifestyle moving with boisterous jokes and outrageous storytelling.
The action of the film is anchored in the apartment shared by Andrea and Bart, where their landlord is constantly threatening to evict them. The bare, open concrete floor makes a perfect handball court, and Andrea and Bart play aggressively, ...

IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 7, 2007 (LIMITED)
The praise afforded to THE LIVES OF OTHERS--Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's remarkable film about life in the former East Berlin--helped this documentary about East Germany's secret police force gain a release in February 2007. With shades of Werner Herzog's LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY, co-directors Massimo Iannetta and Nina Toussaint bring two former prisoners back to the site of the notorious Berlin-Hohenschonhausen prison (which has now become a museum), a place where they were once detained and subjected to unimaginable physical and psychological torture at the hands of the Ministry for State Security, also known as the Stasi. The two people, Sigrid Paul and Hartmut Richter, return separately to Hohenschonhausen, where they recall their lives both before and after their arrests, and explain the Orwellian nightmare of everyday life at the hands of the Stasi.
Iannetta and Toussaint's film is a remarkable piece of work, ...

Truly Human review
THE SUGAR CURTAIN, written and directed by Camila Guzman Urzua, is a documentary that hauntingly captures present-day Cuba. Through interviews with childhood friends who have remained on the turbulent island, Urzua sets out to compare it to the "paradise" she grew up in--the country's prosperous era during the 1970s and 80s. During a time when Cuba boasted a nearly 100 percent literacy rate, Urzua and her schoolmates were provided free education, as well as acceptable dwellings and plenty of supplies and resources, as the country's stability was due to the economic support of other communist regions. But three decades later, the Cuba that once was, that remains in Urzua's memory, is no more. Her friends and family who have remained there reflect on ...
