A brutally realistic glimpse into the lives of five heroin addicts over the course of two years in San Francisco, BLACK TAR HEROIN follows Jake, Tracey, Jessica, Alice, and Oreo through their descent into the world of drugs. Graphically chronicling the disastrous effects heroin addiction has on the lives of the individuals who succumb to it, the film is brutal in its depiction of drug related crimes and diseases: prostitution, AIDS, and, worst of all, overdoses. Although the film is at times difficult to watch, its message is terribly important, making BLACK TAR... a film that both teenagers and adults should pay close attention to. Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street film
This poignant and absorbing drama, based on the true story of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a twenty one-year-old openly gay student in Laramie, Wisconsin, takes an honest approach to the controversial issue of hate crimes and violence. Matthew Shepard (Cy Carter) was a bright and well-liked student at the University of Wisconsin, who had traveled extensively and finally settled in the sleepy cowboy town of Laramie. Told in a series of episodic flashbacks, leading up to the evening of the fateful crime, director Tim Hunter chronicles the lives of Shepard, as well as his killers Aaron McKinney (Brendan Fletcher) and Russell Henderson (Ian Somerhalder), capturing their shared adolescent loneliness and alienation. Reminiscent of Tim Hunter's earlier portrait of disaffected youth, THE RIVER'S EDGE, and 1999's groundbreaking true story of a young woman's hate-motivated murder in BOY'S DON'T CRY, the young characters in the film are struggling to understand their own identity and existence in a small, isolated town. Unlike Matthew, ...

Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street DVD
$19.55 Director Christophe Honoré pays homage to French cinema of the 1960s with LOVE SONGS (LES CHANSONS D'AMOUR). Though it borrows its structure from Jacques Demy's classic THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, this modern musical paints its sad story in much darker colors than its predecessor. LOVE SONGS begins with Parisian lovers Ismaël (Louis Garrel, THE DREAMERS) and Julie (Ludivine Sagnier, SWIMMING POOL) adding a third person to their relationship to add spice to their dying romance. Alice (Clotilde Hesme, REGULAR LOVERS) works with Ismaël in his job at a newspaper, and she shows instant chemistry with both partners. But tragedy soon divides the lovers, and Ismaël is left to cope in the best way he can: through love.
While LOVE SONGS echoes the three-act format of THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG--"the departure," "the absence," and "the return"--Honoré's film is a much bleaker, more realistic offering. The candy colors of Cherbourg are gone, replaced by a dreary looking Paris, where it constantly rains and the characters are forever lacking umbrellas. Even though Garrel, ...

Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street movie DVD
ROADSIDE ROMEO, actor Jugal Hansraj's directorial and screenwriting debut, is India's first attempt at a sophisticated, full-length animated feature. Although the characters are stray dogs in Mumbai, this Yash Raj Films/Disney co-production offers cheerful family fare. The fact that an underworld don and a nightclub performer figure importantly in the plot simply means that the movie's heart belongs to Bollywood. Superstar Saif Ali Khan (DIL CHAHTA HAI) is the voice of Romeo, an abandoned dog from a wealthy home. Like the aristocratic hipsters Khan often plays, Romeo speaks slangy English and has an eye for the latest fashions. He quickly becomes the leader of a hapless gang and opens the dog version of a trendy hair salon, offering makeovers to other canines. But Romeo's success makes him a target of the local don, Charlie Anna, played with lip-smacking relish by Jaaved Jaaferi (SINGH IS KINNG) and drawn in lovingly disgusting ...

Black Tar Heroin: The Dark End of the Street video
$14.65 Neil Burger's follow-up to his accomplished period piece, THE ILLUSIONIST, is an affecting naturalistic modern drama. THE LUCKY ONES concerns three Iraq War soldiers who have just returned to the States: Fred Cheever (Tim Robbins) is out for good, and can't wait to reunite with his wife and son in St. Louis; T.K. Poole (Michael Pena) has suffered an embarrassing injury and is on his way to reconnecting with his fiancée before heading back overseas; and the also-injured Colee Dunn (Rachel McAdams) is on a mission to deliver a precious guitar to her deceased boyfriend's parents in Las Vegas. These strangers are brought together when JFK Airport is shut down indefinitely. Deciding that renting a car is a better option than twiddling their thumbs and waiting for the planes to fly, they hit the road on an eventful journey ...
