CABLE TELEVISION RELEASE: JANUARY 10, 2001 (MTV)
This poignant and absorbing drama, based on the true story of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a twenty one-year-old openly gay student in Laramie, Wisconsin, takes an honest approach to the controversial issue of hate crimes and violence. Matthew Shepard (Cy Carter) was a bright and well-liked student at the University of Wisconsin, who had traveled extensively and finally settled in the sleepy cowboy town of Laramie. Told in a series of episodic flashbacks, leading up to the evening of the fateful crime, director Tim Hunter chronicles the lives of Shepard, as well as his killers Aaron McKinney (Brendan Fletcher) and Russell Henderson (Ian Somerhalder), capturing their shared adolescent loneliness and alienation. Reminiscent of Tim Hunter's earlier portrait of disaffected youth, THE RIVER'S EDGE, and 1999's groundbreaking true story of a young woman's hate-motivated murder in BOY'S DON'T CRY, the young characters in the film are struggling to understand their own identity and existence in a small, isolated town. Unlike Matthew, Aaron and Russell lived a hard-partying drugged-out existence full of rage at their own burnt-out lives and lost opportunities. Down on their luck, and low on drug money, they singled out the well-dressed and effeminate Matthew at a local bar on October 7, 1998 and offered to drive him home, hoping to rob him for drug money. But, what began as a robbery quickly became a hate crime, as Matthew's killers became consumed with rage and anti-gay hate, beating him senseless and tying him to a property divider on a secluded farm road in below-freezing temperatures. Their ruthless crime ended in the widely publicized death of Matthew Shepard five days later.
This well-made MTV production thoroughly captures the lives of the young people of Laramie and the promising student who lost his life due to intolerance and ignorance. MTV premiere: January 10, 2001.
The premiere of this MTV production launched the network's yearlong FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS: TAKE A STAND AGAINST DISCRIMINATION campaign.
After the show's premiere, MTV made television history by taking all regular programming off the air and airing 17 1/2 hours of a commercial-free broadcast that featured celebrities reading accounts of hundreds of hate-crime incidents that have occurred around the country. TV Guide gave a Cheer to the broadcast, saying, "Public relations? Guilty conscience? Who cares? We call it noble."

Anatomy of a Hate Crime Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Anantomy? Not. Dramatization, yes. [The state in question is not Wisconsin, but in fact, Wyoming--you should probably chage this in the description.] The facts speak for themselves, the story of the murder of a young gay man, clearly a picture of dysfunctional crime and the social factors that perpetuated such hate; however, the Television production was merely informative of the incidents as were noteworthy of the press, as an educational and/or historical document it was shortsighted and myopic. Certain aspects of the story were dramatized and others were sacrificed in an effort to be timely marketed to the MTV audience. As a theatrical release, it was original only in so far as the focus here was on Homosexuality in American History/Culture. Sadly, the movie leans more toward entertainment and shock value than to documenting social reality.
The truth is, bigots are hateful people, when they abuse others based on their own warped conception of morality they commit not only murder, but perpuate a social disease that's more than shameful, it's a blight on us all. Living in the town that the murder took place in, I can only say we must do all we can to be more tolerant of differences in others regardless of our sexual orientation, race, or ethncity, but has the same interest surfaced in the media how the murder impacted on locals? The video was good, but social reality is much more complicated than it suggests. With time perhaps a more heartfelt and realistic account may be produced. Laramie is an isolated town on the plains with more than 27,000 people, but it is not a "sleepy" town by any means, and cowboys makeup only a small proportion of the local populous. You have to remember, this is a university town with a mixed population with many different mindsets and residents come from all over the world to live and work here. As in towns and cities all over this country there are folks here too who would do the unthinkable to someone like Matthew Shepard. It's unfortunate and horrible to say the least. I would also add that I don't think the movie portrayed gays realistically either, as it tried to portray Sheppard as a 'boy next door' but in fact, even he had a private side that was neglected in the film. Unfortunately, as a documentary, the film was over-dramatized and driven by a certain need to make people aware of such gross hatred, but was misrepresentative of a townsfolk who could never embrace such hate. This crime occurred in a microcosm of a microcosm and most the events were of such a private nature that no one can deconstruct as the title of the movie implies.
