Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. ...

| | Sam Bardfeld Periodic Trespasses CD (2005) (Import)
Hey! It's James Moody
$21.45 This very intriguing set has violinist Sam Bardfeld narrating a story about a man searching for his purpose in life, trying to decide whether to become a dentist or an esoteric musician. While Bardfeld's brief narrations (labeled "Chapter I," "Chapter II," etc.) are only of passing interest, the music is superior. Sometimes a bit reminiscent of the Bobby Hutcherson Blue Note sessions of the 1960s where Hutcherson's vibes took the place of a piano, these quintet performances feature plenty of interplay between violinist Bardfeld, trumpeter Ron Horton, and vibraphonist Tom Beckham; dynamic solos; and completely unpredictable writing that falls into the modern mainstream of jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
“Sam Bardfeld is a marvellously gifted violinist, composer and arranger” - K. Leander Williams, TimeOutNY“Bardfeld has a loose bow and a mercurial mind. Lots of air and light in this wonderful band - Four Stars” - Paul deBarros, DownBeat“All music tells stories” muses violinist and bandleader Sam Bardfeld, “jazz especially has always been about the idea of a story within a story. You start with a composition and then the solo is someone’s personal spin on the original yarn.” Bardfeld is talking about stories for a reason. His new CD, Periodic Trespasses [The Saul Cycle] on the FreshSound/NewTalent label is a modern jazz record with seven brief spoken interludes (with underscoring by post-production guru Danny Blume/Good & Evil) that tell the story of a fictional protagonist named Saul. “I was sitting on a batch of tunes, literally sitting on the beach thinking about what each was about and what connected them and the character of Saul kind of invented himself.” As the violinist in the Jazz Passengers and the new Roy Nathanson quintet, Bardfeld is no stranger to the idea that jazz can be simultaneously whimsical and conceptual. His varied sideman life also includes current work with Bruce Springsteen (with the Boss' "Pete Seeger Project" jazz pianist D.D. Jackson and the Cuban/klezmer/downtown Septeto Roberto Rodriguez. Past gigs include work with John Zorn, Ray Anderson, Mark Ribot, James Spaulding, Anthony Braxton, John Cale, Mark Dresser, Johnny Pacheco, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Steve Bernstein, Nancy Sinatra, The String Trio of NY, Drew Gress, Butch Morris, PhilipJohnston. So what is the relationship between Sam Bardfeld and Saul? I know Sam, and Saul isn’t Sam any more than “Philip Roth” in the novel Operation Shylock was the same person as his author, Philip Roth. It’s just that ...
| | Talking Heads True Stories CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Digipak; DualDisc
Hey! It's James Moody
$9.09 This Dualdisc features the complete album on CD side, along with 2 previously unreleased cuts: the Pop Staples vocal version of "Papa Legba" and the Tito Larriva vocal version of "Radio Head." The DVD side includes the 5.1 mix of Pop Staples' "Papa Legba" along with the videos for "Love For Sale" and "Wild WIld Life."
This is not the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It contains the same songs, but performed by the Talking Heads. (In the movie, the various actors sing the songs.) Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums). Additional personnel: Tommy Morrell (steel guitar); Tommy Camfield (fiddle); Steve Jordan (accordion); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); The Bert Cross Choir, The St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School Choir. Principally recorded at Studio Southwest, Sunnyvale, Texas. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Original Soundtrack/Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass guitar, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums). Time hasn't been kind to Talking Heads' ancillary soundtrack to David Byrne's oddball directorial debut. Though it generated one of the band's biggest radio hits ("Wild Wild Life"), both the film and its songs were dismissed as self-consciously ...

Hey! It's James Moody
$12.15 R&B vocalist, Valvin “V” Roane II returns with It Is Finished: The Paradox Vol I, the follow up album that many have anxiously awaited. A few years back, an album entitled The Revelation Is Now Televised quietly made waves in and around key independent soul music circles. The internet buzzed about this album that consisted of conscious lyrics, booming bass lines, romantic ballads and soulful melodies. However, little was known about the man behind this rousing collection of songs whose musical career has garnered work with the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Justin Timberlake and Musiq Soulchild to name a few. Valvin Roane II aka “V” hailing from the state of New Jersey, with seemingly no publicity for his debut album, had begun to awaken the musical senses in many who were eager for aural stimulation. Touring extensively with Jill Scott as a backing vocalist for several years, V somehow managed to find the time to work on a follow up album. On March 17, 2009 music lovers around the globe were elated to learn that the long awaited project, It Is Finished: The ...
