Recorded in Springsteen's New Jersey bedroom on a 4-track cassette recorder.

As a followup to THE RIVER, a double-album blast of old-time rock and roll, this amazing solo-acoustic folk album came out of nowhere in the fall of 1982. More precisely, it came out of Bruce Springsteen's back pocket. He recorded what would become NEBRASKA at home on a 4-track recorder, intending it as a demo tape for a full-band album. The band versions were recorded, but Springsteen sensed something missing; eventually, he became convinced that his demo tape, which he had carried around in a back pocket of his jeans for several days, had a spiritual wallop that he and the band couldn't recreate. He had the cassette cleaned up and turned into his sixth album.

There's little doubt that he made the right choice. The songs on NEBRASKA form a bleak cycle about men on the run, from the law, from their fathers or from themselves, usually for reasons even they don't understand. And Springsteen's dry, howling voice, which sometimes dips to a desperate whisper and sometimes rises to a haunted scream, seems to carry all their fears and all their hidden knowledge. The title song, about Charlie Starkweather, the serial killer chronicled in the movie BADLANDS, is one of two on the album about men who see the electric chair as their natural, God-given fate, if not their salvation. A couple of others could be the very drivers of the cars Paul Simon once counted on the New Jersey turnpike, except that where Simon saw America, all these characters see are dirty refinery towers.

This was songwriting that channeled both Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams, and the stark sound of NEBRASKA was not merely a homage to them, but a perfect casing for these tales. Whether strumming through "Atlantic City," picking out arpeggios on "Nebraska" or banging out a shuffle on "Open All Night" (a rare upbeat moment), Springsteen's lone acoustic guitar was all the accompaniment they needed, echoing their loneliness and isolation.

Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here. SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone ...

The Japanese limited edition of this classic album is packaged in a deluxe LP sleeve that replicates the original album artwork. It's almost hard to believe now that for the first decade of his career Bruce Springsteen was a gigantic cult artist; a musician who could sell a couple of million records and fill hockey rinks, but who was was no more likely than Elvis Costello to get airplay on pop radio. BORN IN THE USA was the album on which he flexed his muscles (literally) and changed all that. With song titles and choruses that seemed to reflect all that was good and strong in America, belying songs that were about everything that was going wrong, BORN IN THE USA was one of those cultural events that resonated ...

Subject To Change
Switched Subject To Change CD  (2002) Parental Advisory

The debut disc from Cleveland's Switched is slick MTV-styled nouveau metal, awash with the standard sort of grim adolescent lyrical stresses, and intense volume over innovation. The single and lead track, "Inside" encapsulates much if not all of what follows: pitched-down guttural vocals, pounding and pedestrian bass and drum lines, and a semi-catchy chorus decent enough to have netted them bottom billing during Ozzfest 2002. Songwriters Ben Schigel and Bradley Kochmit continue to tap right into the heart of their genre with tracks like "Four Walls" and "Reflection," but they are never able to crest the clichés that they have mastered. As a result, tunes like "Dead Fingers" devolve into uninspiring formula. Howard Benson's production work alongside Tom Baker's mastering, however, is the sort of spot-on effort that makes Switched appear considerably more viable. Unless the band follows the advice of their album title, they will perhaps be forever more suited to the soundtrack of an aggressive video game than the collection of a discerning metal enthusiast. ~ JoE Silva Nu-metal hopefuls Switched (spelled in the gimmicky manner Sw1tched as often as not on the band's website and other official material) came out of a surprisingly fertile Cleveland scene that also brought listeners Mushroomhead and Chimaira. Subject to Change, the debut disc following an inexpensive teaser of live cuts and one non-album track called Spread Your E.P., has the requisite energetic riffing, screamed vocals, and cathartic takes on life the genre demands, but little here helps the band stand out from a very crowded pack of similar artists. The band's musical dexterity and enthusiasm are notable and show promise for future endeavors, but don't quite make up for the obvious lack of fresh ideas at this time. ~ Brian O'Neill The debut disc from Cleveland's ...
Squid Hell Sessions
Annie and The Beekeepers Squid Hell Sessions CD  (2009)

Nebraska album
CD $12.69  Top 500
“Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers owes much of its sound to the lilting country and bluegrass melodies of its forebears, but its musical palette is diverse enough to include a touch of New Orleans Dixie clarinet and some gorgeously resonant cello playing.” – The Boston GlobeAnnie and the Beekeepers is a folk and country inspired trio that met at Berklee College of Music in December 2006. When Annie Lynch (lead vocal, guitar), Ken Woodward (upright bass), and Alexandra Spalding (cello, vocals) first began playing together in living rooms and basements around Boston, the mysterious disappearance of bee colonies throughout the world was receiving a great deal of attention in the media. As the group built the foundations of their band in coffeehouses and clubs around the Northeast, the collapse of the bee colonies fascinated them and gave them their name. The Bee has long been a symbol for hard work and community, and the Beekeepers were inspired to preserve and promote those same qualities in their music. To that end, the songs on their first album, 2008’s Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers and the forthcoming EP, Squid Hell Sessions (May 12, 2009), are honest, collaborative efforts, drawing on the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

The members of Annie and the Beekeepers came to Berklee from across the country with different musical backgrounds – Annie is a self-taught guitarist and the Beekeepers’ principal songwriter from Cape Cod; Ken is from Charlottesville and plays acoustic bass and sometimes stomps on a snare at the same time for fun; Alex grew up playing cello in orchestras in Northern California. Annie met Ken through her assorted attempts to learn bluegrass and saw Alex playing in a Berklee Joni Mitchell ensemble. One brief rehearsal later, the group of four gathered in Ken's frigid basement apartment with producer and peer, Frank Charlton, for two days of recording. Though the work was never titled or released, those two days in December of 2006 gave birth to a band that would go on to build a reputation for their unique instrumentation and lyrics, evocative layered harmonies, and heart warming live performance.

In the summer of 2007, Annie and the Beekeepers joined Grammy-nominated producer, Jack Gauthier, at his lakeside studio for the recording of their debut, self-titled album, Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers. The album was released in January of 2008 and was played frequently on WERS Emerson Radio and WUMB Boston Folk Radio, and earned fans at The Boston Globe, The Tripwire, and ...
