| | Dave Stryker Big City CD Dave Stryker Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Always a killer, Dave Stryker is at the top of his game on Big City. A prolific composer and potent player with a penchant for bop, ballads and blues, Stryker has incorporated such important (and wildly diverse) six-string influences as Wes Montgomery, P
Personnel: Dave Stryker (guitar); Dave Kikoski (piano); Ed Howard (bass guitar); Victor Lewis (drums). An excellent straight-ahead guitarist who by 2005 had led 18 CDs, Dave Stryker is not quite a household name, although he is widely respected in the jazz world. He spent two years with Jack McDuff's group and worked with Stanley Turrentine for much of nine years before emerging as a co-leader (with Steve Slagle) and as the head of his own groups. On Big City, Stryker performs four of his originals, including the medium-tempo blues "All Night Long" and the "Cherokee"-based "Biddy Fleet," and three standards with an excellent quartet. Pianist David Kikoski shares the solo space while bassist Ed Howard and drummer Victor Lewis add subtlety and swing to the date. Stryker's melodic approach, heard at its best on "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" and "If Ever I Would Leave You," is accessible and fits well into jazz's modern mainstream. Big City, which has a surprisingly successful jazz interpretation of "It Was a Very Good Year," is an excellent example of the guitarist's musical talents and is easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 - "A tour de force of Stryker's playing is found on BIG CITY....The music holds the intensity and precision one expects from a New York-based group." JazzTimes (p.73) - "Kikoski's presence on BIG CITY is a delight..." $13.79 Pianist David Hazeltine puts his arranger's touch to brilliant use on this album of Modern Standards: great songs that became popular in the 60's & 70's. Hazeltine and his first rate rhythm mates David Williams and Joe Farnsworth bring a ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Big City
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. ...

Recorded at GMP Studios, San Antonio, Texas. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Recording information: GMP Music, San Antonio, TX. Photographer: Ricardo Moreno. When you travel from the East Coast to the southwestern part of the United States, the Latin grooves change dramatically -- out west, the congas and timbales of salsa and merengue that reign supreme in New York and Miami take a back seat to the accordions of norteño, the chugging tubas of banda, and the rich trumpets of mariachi. Regional Mexican music is the dominant Latin groove in the western U.S., where established Mexican groups like los Tigres del Norte and los Rieleros del Norte are as much of an institution as the late Celia Cruz was in the Afro-Cuban field. Conjunto Primavera is another example of a very durable Mexican outfit; they've been around since the late `70s and were still going strong in the early 2000s. This 2003 release doesn't break any new ground for Primavera, who provide yet another dose of the sort of romantic Mexican music that put them on the map. The things one ordinarily expects from Primavera -- norteño, Tex-Mex, sentimental ballads, and the Mexican interpretation of the Colombian cumbia rhythm -- are still on the menu, and the band continues to be smooth, sleek, and pop -- minded. Few surprises occur, but if Decide Tú is predictable, it is predictable in a comforting, pleasurable way. In a sense, the arrival of a new Primavera disc is a lot like the arrival ...

Big City
$12.15 If you combined the sounds of Prince, Queen, Guns n Roses, and Willie Nelson you probably wouldn’t expect to hear it on country radio. But, that’s exactly where Nathan intends his music to be heard. His diverse taste in music is just one of the things that sets him apart from so many other country artists. Raised in northern Illinois, you’ll also find no southern drawl, no wranglers and no rodeo experience in his background. But, don’t be mistaken, his sound is still all country.Since 2005 Nathan has been dazzling audiences throughout the southwest with his smooth vocal tone and unmistakable smile. He ...
