I wasted my money! I couldn't believe this dvd. Everything about this dvd is unprofessional. The lighting sucks. They don't even show Mariah on a full screen, she is on what looks like a drawing of a small tv. The people speaking about her are shown more than she is. The women actually goes on to say that she wouldn't even buy one of Mariah's albums. It's so pathetic. Anyone who decides not to buy it, trust me you aren't missing anything. It's a poor attempt for someone trying to make money off Mariah! Submitted by Sheila (Jacksonville FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Plain awful! While it is always great to add something to my Mariah Carey collection, this DVD was a simple waste of money.
The only clips shown are from 1996, and are shown inside a small television set. The editing is just plain awful, and the people commenting on her are just lame. One woman being interviewed claims that Mariah was named after the song "The Wind Always Blows On Mariah" from "Paint Your Wagon." Ummm, not quite, deary. The song is called "They Call The Wind Mariah." Obviously some people did not check their facts before being interviewed for this!
Otherwise, it does contain one interview that, while I have on CD, I have never seen, so it was great to finally see what Mariah looked like and the setting when she gave this interview back in 1996 after her brief tour in Japan and before she was ready to complete her "Daydream" tour in Europe.
If you have the extra money to waste, by all means... But otherwise, save your money for Mariah's re-releases of "Merry Christmas" and "The Emancipation of Mimi" coming up later this year. I wish I would have. Submitted by Michele (Bethlehem, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Pee Wee Russell Jazz Reunion CD (1961)
Mariah Carey - Music Video Box Documentary DVD
$9.65 This LP (whose contents have been reissued on CD) features a reunion between tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell; they revisit "If I Could Be with You," a song they had recorded together in a classic version back in 1929. Russell was beginning to perform much more modern material than the Dixieland music associated with the Eddie Condon players and on this set (which also features trumpeter Emmett Berry, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Jo Jones), he plays a couple of Duke Ellington tunes, two originals and "Tin Tin Deo." Hawkins is also in fine form and this somewhat surprising program is quite successful. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
Mariah Carey - Music Video Box Documentary movie DVD
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its composer would revisit with his Concert Jazz Band. The veteran alto saxophonist contributed the low-key ballad "Shady Side," the sassy blues "Back ...
| | Mariah Carey Butterfly CD (1997)
Mariah Carey - Music Video Box Documentary video
$7.59 "Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.
A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom.
BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness ...
