Personnel: Sean Jones (trumpet); Sean Jones; Tia Fuller (flute, alto saxophone); Ron Blake , Walter Smith III (tenor saxophone); Kenny Davis (acoustic bass, double bass, electric bass, bass guitar); E.J. Strickland, Corey Rawls (drums); Andre Hayward (trombone); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Orrin Evans (keyboards). Liner Note Author: Gretchen Carhartt. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: Raj Naik. Trumpeter Sean Jones certainly covers a great deal of musical ground on Gemini. The music ranges from the hard boppish "In Her Honor," a hint of 1960s lyrical Freddie Hubbard on "Rain of Patience," and the medium-tempo "Blues for Matt B." to some more electronic, funky, and even fusionish selections. The music on Gemini keeps one guessing throughout and Jones plays well in every setting. The other soloists, which at various times include Tim Fuller on alto and flute, the tenors of Ron Blake and Walter Smith III, trombonist Andre Hayward, and pianist Mulgrew Miller among others, are utilized to their best advantage, but it is the warm sound and versatility of Jones that makes Gemini a consistent success. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.91) - "Jones has lovely passages. One of them, 'Gemini' ends the CD with a reflective gospel melody wrapped in his rich, broad tone." Gemini
$14.39 When it comes to the Young Lions -- that is, retro improvisers whose straight-ahead hard bop and post-bop are a throwback to the '50s and '60s -- there are two equally absurd viewpoints in the jazz world. The Stanley Crouch/Wynton Marsalis crowd sees them as musical saviors who are rescuing jazz from the "evils and horrors" of fusion, avant-garde jazz, and jazz-funk; at the opposite extreme are avant-gardists who insist that the Young Lions are putting the nail in jazz's creative coffin. But truth be told, the Young Lions will be neither jazz' salvation nor its downfall. Innovators and traditionalists both have their place in jazz, and when it comes to trumpet playing, there is room for a risk-taking explorer like Dave Douglas, as well as a more traditional Young Lion such as Sean Jones. Eternal Journey, Jones' first album as a leader, finds the trumpeter drawing on the influence of Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, and other big-toned icons -- Jones definitely appreciates the trumpeters with the big, fat, full-bodied tones, although there are also hints of the softer, more economical Miles Davis in some of his playing. Jones is no innovator; the Ohio native ...

What more could Latin jazz fans ask for, seriously? Not only are all the players just this side of top guns, they have been playing together in the same group for just shy of ten years. An all-star lineup and the genuine synergy that comes with regular collaboration do not happen often. When they do, ...

| | Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet Conclave CD (2005) (Import) Netherlands
Gemini
$16.39 Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in lights. With the release of Conclave, their day in the sun has come. This 2005 release is easily one of the strongest Latin jazz releases of the year. Luis Perdomo is rapidly distinguishing himself as the most important, in-demand pianist on the scene. Conguero ...

| | Baby Bash Menage A Trois CD (2004) (Import) With DVD; Canada
Gemini
$17.65 This DVD & Compact Disc combo features over 74 minutes of Baby Bash music. Guest Appearances include Frankie J, South Park Mexican, Frost, DJ Kane & Drew of the Kumbia Kings, Don Cisco, Nino Brown, Mr. Kee, Powda, Russell Lee, more. The DVD includes live perfomances by Baby Bash and South Park Mexican, among others.
The bonus DVD features live video footage of Baby Bash and South Park Mexican. Personnel: Baby Bash; Don Cisco , DJ Kane, Frankie J, South Park Mexican. Mènage a Trois doesn't explain itself in the liner notes, the little "includes the hits..." sticker on the front, or anywhere else. It's a collection of Baby Bash's earlier works, all on the Dopehouse label and mostly under his Baby Beesh moniker. The recordings are rougher, more street, and way less produced than Tha Smokin' Nephew was, but Bash is a fantastic, charismatic rapper and always has been. Problem is these recordings flowed better in their original context rather than in this overly long, poorly paced compilation. A bunch of tracks from the Ultimate Cartel album are stuck up front, a good bit of On tha Cool takes up the middle, and 2001's Savage Dreams fills the last ...
