5 stars Much better then good
I've been listening to Richard Elliot since 1991 ("On the Town"). Perhaps "Metro Blue" is not his best album however belongs to my favorite together with "Chill Factor" (99) and "Jumpin' Off" (97). What is very important, all the tracks on "Metro Blue" - from top to bottom - do not disappoint. Another advantages - diverse and melodic compositions, rather softer and effortless sounding of Richard's tenor saxophone in comparison to his early albums and substantial contribution of Rick Braun. Perhaps we should expect a collective project of both musicians from Artizen Music Group.

This album sounds a lot like some of Bob Berg's stuff only a bit more awesome. If you dig Soft-Porn-Jazz then you will like this album.

Not one of Richard Elliot's better efforts even with Rick Braun producing. Don't get me wrong, it's okay, but I've come to expect more melodic songs from him. Recorded in the summer of 1955, this session was a half-year after the famed meeting of Davis & Jackson with Thelonious Monk on Christmas Eve 1954. The special chemistry of Miles & Milt is further enhanced on the 2 numbers written by Jackie McLean where the composer's alto saxophone makes the group a sextet. Most of Miles Davis' Prestige recordings (all of which are currently available in the Original Jazz Classics series) have also been reissued by the audiophile CD label DCC Jazz. This is one of the trumpeter's lesser-known sets, an outing with friends: the up-and-coming pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Percy Heath, drummer Art Taylor, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and (on two of the four songs) altoist Jackie McLean. The brevity of the program (only a touch over 30 minutes) keeps this enjoyable outing from being too essential.
