Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Special Edition John Wayne delivered one of his most memorable performances in THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, a suspenseful thrill ride that presaged the disaster films of the 1970s with the story of a commercial jetliner that suffers engine trouble on a transpacific flight from Honolulu to San Francisco. With pilot John Sullivan (Robert Stack) too panic-stricken to act, it's up to second-in-command Dan Roman (Wayne) to guide the aircraft to safety--despite being traumatized by the death of his own wife and child in a plane crash years earlier. Wayne's self-doubting copilot presides over jittery crew members and passengers whose stories are told in flashbacks and fleshed out by a stellar supporting cast that includes Claire Trevor, Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Phil Harris, Robert Newton, and Sidney Blackmer. Directed by William Wellman from a script penned by aviation writer Ernest K. Gann from his own novel of the same name, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY garnered six Oscar nominations (including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for both Trevor and Sterling) and an actual win for Dimitri Tiomkin's indelible, whistle-themed film score. Long held out of print by a legal dispute, this little-seen disaster classic has finally been restored and remastered to its pristine Cinemascope glory for a truly riveting tale of terror in the skies. High And The Mighty Reviews: "Often cited as among the first examples of the disaster film....THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY remains superb entertainment."

High And The Mighty film
$14.79 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. ...

High And The Mighty movie DVD
$9.69 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly Oliver (who garnered an Oscar ...

$10.29 Along with THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY, John Wayne's thrilling survival epic ISLAND IN THE SKY is a Duke classic long held out of print by a legal dispute with the star's family. While both films were directed by William Wellman with a script adapted by aviation writer Ernest K. Gann from his own novel, this little-seen gem follows former WWII army pilot Captain Dooley (Wayne) as his transport plane runs out of fuel and crash lands in the icy tundras of the Canadian Arctic. It isn't long before Dooley and his surviving crew members face a limited food supply, below-zero temperatures, primitive radio equipment, and nearly impossible odds as they wait (and hope) for rescue. Walter Abel, ...
