Not only was Johnny Mercer a prolific songwriter - he was lyricist for more popular songs than any songwriter in history, he also co-founded Capitol Records and was a stylish singer whose genial vocal style proved popular in its own right with 4 chart-toppers in America. The Pied Pipers were a popular vocal group with female leads Jo Stafford (1942-1944), then June Hutton, who became famous with Tommy Dorsey in the early 1940s. Signed to Capitol, their perfect phrasing and modern harmonic blending of four voices gave them 12 Top Thirty hits throughout the 1940s. During 1943 and 1944 the Pied Pipers were regulars on Johnny Mercers radio show resulting in a ready made combination for recording purposes. Most of the 28 remastered tracks are appearing on CD for the first time.
