It makes sense that Terry Date produced Catch Without Arms, Dredg's second record for Interscope. The producer is a veteran of Deftones albums, and it's that band's rich but still rocking palette that's the intent here. And they succeed. Like past Dredg releases Catch has a conceptual flow. But openers "Ode to the Sun" and "Bug Eyes" focus the grandeur and meandering pace of the band's past work around effective melodies and a steadiness in the rhythm. The choruses emphasize the Bono/Chino Moreno in Gavin Hayes' vocal, and when the rhythm drops out for a contemplative piano moment, nothing feels forced because this is what Dredg has been working toward for years. It's not like in the blurry emo world, where string sections crash regularly into soliloquies and it usually just ends up as melodrama. Catch Without Arms looks to groups like Deftones and At the Drive-In, but there's also a tremendous capacity in Dredg for straightforward pop. The title track is a standout, as is "Zebraskin," which with its keyboards and silky beat could be Cousteau or Sweetback. No kidding. And then the churning guitar intro of "Tanbark Is Hot Lava" drops, and you're bewildered again. "Sang Real" features drum processing and treated piano, "Planting Seeds" has the tension/chorus release quality of contemporary Brit-pop, and "Spitshine" has one of the record's strongest melodies. Dredg does lose the thread occasionally. The wandering "Jamais Vu" sounds like a stoned Incubus, complete with undergraduate love letter lyrics. ("I will wait all of this time above you/is that what you wanted?") And the album could've really used more of the band's rocking side, to balance the band's prodigious use of atmosphere. But "Hung Over on a Tuesday" offers just such a blend, and "Not That Simple" opens its chorus with a satisfying distortion crunch that's predictable, but nevertheless irresistible. The influences in Dredg's sound swirl thicker than ghosts above a cemetery. Still, Catch Without Arms works. It focuses the band's exploratory qualities instead of reigning them in completely. ~ Johnny Loftus
Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing harmonic underpinnings. This is due in part to singer Gavin Hayes, who sounds more like U2's Bono than a metal screecher. Hayes's tenor soars above tunes such as "Ode To the Sun" and the title track. "Hungover On a Tuesday" contains another towering vocal, which moves effortlessly over Mark Engles's syncopated guitar. Finally, "Matroska (The Ornament)" brims with deep emotion; it also has an infectious, even danceable, groove. If CATCH WITHOUT ARMS shows a young band that still has much more in store for its listeners.

5 stars Incredible
I first saw Dredj at this crappy hardcore show in Jersey. I was on my way out the door when they went on, and with the first note, I was running back up front, completely engrossed in their sound and style. This album is incredible - the blend of classical styling with heavy rock and incredible vocals really reminds me of bands like Muse and Mars Volta. And the reverb-drenched guitar leads blow me away every time. You know that chill that you get sometimes when something is dead-on? I had that the whole way through this album. Love it.

5 stars Visions
The first time I heard this band I was hooked, from the album El Cielo. I've been waiting for this album since 2003. And once listening to it I'm honored to say that this band brings a meaning to life that many cannot express. Many groups talk of a false life, while Dredg speaks about a true realm in a non-religous way. To those who have an open mind this a band to be listening to and this album proves the point. *****The whole band rocks! It's not that simple!

5 stars CD Of the Year
Once again Dredg has come out with an intelligent record with awesome songs, melodies, and of course the soaring vocals of Gavin Hayes. This cd is an essential purchase for fans of A Perfect Circle! Picture a more melodic version of APC with some progressive elements and tremendous vocals.

5 stars I love this Album the most!
Track 1,2,and 7 are my favorites. I love Sang Real because it shows great emotion in the sound of the music. I rate this song a 10 out of 5. The different types of instruments used is what makes this song unique and amazing!

American expatriate trombonist Jerry Tilitz in various small group settings on the German label Belaphon that include the legendary Horace Parlan, Adam Nussbaum, Bill Mays, Ray Drummond, Frank Wunsch and Jimmi Roger Pedersen. Recommended by the reviewers below:-------Jazz Journal International Magazine "My first encounter with the Hamburg-based New Yorker Jerry Tilitz was early in 1994 when I received an advance tape of Randy Sandke's Buck Clayton Tribute album (now released on Hans Nagel-Heyer's enterprising new label). I was very impressed with Jerry's playing in that mainstream context but his debut CD as leader is a revelation. His basic style derives from J.J. Johnson and his former teacher Curtis Fuller but with a fruitier tone reminiscent of Bennie Green. His virtuosity is such that he can range convincingly across the whole jazz trombone tradition from Kid Ory growls and slurs (Basin Street Blues) to the musical acrobatics of Albert Mangelsdorf (Portrait of Lennie). Yet every note is played with great taste, inventiveness and swing and his formidable technique is beautifully controlled.Jerry's talents are not merely instrumental. He is a composer of quality tunes (the ballads Reninscence and Nancy's Waltz being especially attractive) and he sings his own lyric to J.J. Johnson's Lament with engaging sensitivity.A whole CD of only trombone and rhythm can be a risky enterprise but Jerry ups the stakes by using just bass on Basin Street, piano on the slow ballad treatment of Mack The Knife, and playing unaccompanied in exuberant Rollins style on the calyso, ...

Stunning new album ‘Flotsam’ Now available! Reviews Robin DenselowFriday November 30, 2007The Guardian Julie Collings is a DIY celebrity in the making. She is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Derby who was not only responsible for all the "instruments, voices and noises" on this impressively laid-back and thoughtful new set, but also recorded and produced it herself in her spare room. Her singing is light, breathy and personal, and she backs herself on a variety of instruments, dominated by acoustic guitar and a gentle wash of electronica. There's not a vast range in her work - most of the tracks are sad-edged and slow - but she is a confident and distinctive song-writer, as shown by the personal and reflective The Last Post, the drifting electronica of Don't, the easy pop charm of Simple Things, or the more gently gutsy, guitar-backed title track. It's a remarkable effort, considering the technical problems she must have faced, and she will now hopefully move out of that spare room to find more varied backing for her songs. A dash of fiddle, accordion or cello could work wondershttp://www.rock-n-reel.co.uk/ "JULIE COLLINGS, a Derby-based singer-songwriter debuts with Flotsam, a gently beguiling collection of eleven originals where her atmospheric vocals, tumbling guitar lines and occasional effects push things in the direction of acoustic acid folk. Sporadically it does float off into the ether in its dreamy ambience but her stylish delivery manages to prevent disaster." BBC Radio 2 show (DEC 2005) Janice Long [Simple Things] " I think its lovely!"BBC Radio Derby, Shane O' Connor September 2005 "Makes you sit up & pay attention..Absolutely fantastic!...Just blown me away!.....Breathtaking!.......Light's up a room"Gig Review from Margi @ The Vic, Derby *supporting BC Camplight 6th March 2006"First artist on was a lady called Julie Collings, whose dulcet tones immediately grabbed my attention. If I had to compare her voice to someone famous would say possibly a bit of Sarah McLachlan / Sheryl Crow. She has a beautiful voice indeed, teamed with really well written songs that makes you think and boy can she play that guitar!! Julie was like a breath of fresh air and really set a high standard for the rest of the night."from Rambles Cultural Arts Magazine 2nd April 2005 by Jo ...
