What seemed like a great idea on Subterranean Masquerade's pint-sized debut EP, Temporary Psychotic State: applying the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach of progressive rock to psychedelic waffling, gothic vocalizing, and heavy metal crunch -- proves a little too much to stomach on their sprawling full-length, Suspended Animation Dreams. With the exception of a few, regular-sized tracks that mostly sound unfinished (or perhaps, in retrospect, were mere leftover passages), the album is comprised mostly of ill-defined epics, seemingly built specifically to convey the band's versatility via the juxtaposition of polar musical styles. Thus, psychedelic whimsy leads into doom metal fury, leads into lounge piano swing, leads into dreamy folk-rock, leads into darkwave negativity, leads into mournful hick harmonica, leads into orchestrated string sections, etc., etc. -- progressive enough for you? If not, perhaps the marriage of Bedouin chants and gypsy strings closing "No Place Like Home" will tip the scales, or certainly the snazzy saxophone solo backing Cookie Monster grunts on "The Rock N Roll Preacher." Curiously, the band's death growls actually sound much more convincing than the deadpan baritones and conversational narrations spread throughout these songs, confirming the notion that both vocals and the frequently nonsensical lyrics they decry are truly the album's weakest link. And ultimately, although it's hard to knock Subterranean Masquerade for trying to create truly unpredictable music, this widespread lack of cohesion winds up diluting their impact and leaves only fascinating moments amidst the generalized chaos. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Ozark Mountain Daredevils Lost Cabin Sessions CD (2003)
Suspended Animation Dreams
$13.65 The Ozark Mountain Daredevils spent most of their existence identified as a country-pop band, but when they first got together, they were a country outfit with some specific roots rock influences, closer in spirit to the Byrds of Sweetheart of the Rodeo than to the Eagles or Poco, and more of the real article -- as all of the bandmembers were still living in Springfield, MO -- than even the Byrds were by 1968. These sessions -- dating from the summer of 1972, well over a year before the band first recorded and before it even had a name -- represent those roots, and the songs also arguably represent the Daredevils' finest body of work, with sweet and unpretentious harmonies and stripped-down (yet often very sweet) playing (check out "On Our Carousel," which could have been a single and is worth the price of the disc), all within a much purer country idiom than the band later manifested. Culturally, this might not be as important a release as, say, the Sweetheart of the ...
| | Obsessed Incarnate CD (1999)
Suspended Animation Dreams
$10.69 The Obsessed are the most unfortunately unappreciated band in hard rock history. Incarnate, a collection of various sessions spanning years and lineups, serves as testament to the band's great essential constants. The trademarks in question are tough but easy-going stoner grooves, Wino's detuned death machine of a guitar, and an absolute heaviness that permeates their work like a weird mixture of sweat and incense. The band, in whatever embodiment, create this heaviness by always working as a unit. Hard rock excesses are avoided; every drum fill and every note of every solo works toward the song rather than individual glory. Make no mistake though, Wino's solos, while tactful, are still heroic -- he offers unique schizo-bluesy runs throughout Incarnate, of particular depth and feeling on the "Streetside/Mourning" sessions ...

| | Blood Tsunamiu Thrash Metal CD (2007)
Suspended Animation Dreams
$13.49 If a style of music goes out of vogue, someone will likely try to make it popular again (or at least make it more plentiful). That's why the music world has seen a Dixieland revival in the '50s, a rockabilly revival movement in the late '70s and early '80s, and a power metal revival movement in the '90s and 2000s. Thrash metal's peak years were the '80s and early '90s, and the fact that Blood Tsunami named this 2007 release Thrash Metal indicates that the Norwegian band would love to see a big thrash revival movement in the early 2000s. But there's a twist: Evil Pete, Blood Tsunami's lead singer/founder, doesn't sound like ...
