Demons & Wizards head in a more acoustic direction with TOUCHED BY THE CRIMSON KING, the album following their self-titled debut. The album contains 14 tracks including "Wicked Witch," "Dorian," and "Lunar Lament."
In the early '80s, a style of heavy metal was fast rising, in which groups sang about (and even to a point, dressed like) characters from an era long ago, in which gentlemen dressed in armor, and saved damsels in distress in tall castles. While some of these groups built a long-term career (Dio, Iron Maiden, etc.), many fell by the wayside as the style faded away, and was replaced by thrash and glam metal acts. By the early '90s, some of the music from these earlier bands could be detected in such new acts as Dream Theater and Iced Earth, who also pushed the 'technicality' of their music up a notch. Fast-forward another ten years to the early 2000s, and there is a new crop of bands that combine both of these metal eras together, especially by the prog metal "supergroup" Demons & Wizards. Comprised of Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch, the duo issued their second album in 2005, Touched by the Crimson King. Picture a modern metal soundtrack accompanying a triumphant ride through a forest on horseback, and you have an idea of what such songs as "Crimson King" and "Terror Train" sound like, as well as the album-closing cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song." But not all of Crimson King is riff-based, as evidenced by the tranquil ending of "Beneath These Waves" and the beginning of "The Gunslinger." But by and large, Touched by the Crimson King is a modern-day prog metal fan's dream. ~ Greg Prato

This is maybe the BEST album for 2005. This might not be as good as their first album but it ROCKS! Get it while there are still CDs to buy! :)))

Taken by surprise
After hearing "Terror Train" on Music Match and liking it, I picked up the CD to check out the rest of the songs, and was blown away by "The Gunslinger" in particular, more "mellow" than what I normally listen to but I think I ran this album for a month straight =P pick it up!

At a time when most of the first wave of Norwegian black metal bands are long gone, Darkthrone has become the senior figures of this particular subgenre almost by default; they're like the Rolling Stones of death metal. In between recording its third and fourth albums, Static-X kept its rabid fanbase sated with BENEATH, BETWEEN, BEYOND, an 18-track compilation of rare tracks, demos, and previously unreleased material. The expected mix of jackhammer tempos, lead-pipe riffs, and pounding time-keeping saturate this disc, and make demos for Static-X standouts "I Am," "Love Dump," "Get to the Gone," and "New Pain" all the more impressive.
Two cuts--"Breathe" and "Deliver Me"--were cut during the sessions for SHADOW ZONE, and include the aforementioned nuances along with the kind of grooves sure to encourage plenty of head-bobbing and pogo dancing.
