The great irony of hardcore punk is that for a style that claims to be so fervently about breaking rules and fighting oppression, few music fans come down so hard on bands for stepping outside of the accepted stylistic norms as hardcore fans. For 1987's New Wind, 7 Seconds took a giant step away from hardcore orthodoxy, and paid the price in terms of the band's diminished standing in the hardcore community. The pointed thank-you to U2 in the album's credits was only the first warning sign, although the album sounds as if it was inspired more by the positive message of albums like War and The Unforgettable Fire than U2's actual music; these are not big rock anthems with one-chord guitar drones, but straight-up pop songs with hardcore roots, not really all that far from what bands like the Replacements or Soul Asylum were doing. OK, the band in the picture looks like five dorky white guys in tuxes, and not too promising, but trust this reviewer, a lot of this CD rocks. Johnossi are singer/guitarist John Engelbert and drummer Oskar "Ossi" Bonde, and for a duo, this Swedish pair packs quite a punch. You wouldn't think so from the folky, acoustic intro to "The Show Tonight," which opens their eponymous debut album, not, at least, until Engelbert's electric guitar storms in and kicks the song toward hard rock. But Johnossi delight in bashing around genres, from the bluesy ballad "The Lottery," which slams into Southern rock and boasts a "Free Bird"-styled soaring guitar solo, to the porch picking blues of "Man Must Dance," which slides surprisingly into sharply angular post-punk. "Dance" is irrepressible and "Execution Song" equally so, an insatiable slab of '60s garage. "Rescue Team" positively swaggers around British Invasion territory with a fabulously infectious singalong chorus, mod for the modern age, Engelbert's Little Richard's "oohs" adding to the fun.
