Any young R&B performer that can get Aretha Franklin to introduce his debut album must be doing something right. Although Trey Songz's I GOTTA MAKE IT opens with "A Message from Aretha," an uplifting bit of advice from the soul legend, the record isn't an old-school outing; this is hip-hop-inflected contemporary R&B in the R. Kelly vein.
The smooth, catchy single "Gotta Make It" appears twice here, first as a collaboration between the gently crooning Songz and the lightning-fast rapper Twista, and later as a remix featuring more words of wisdom from Franklin and the steady flow of Juvenile. Other highlights include the charming slow jam "Gotta Go" and the infectiously percussive "Just Wanna Cut." Though Songz is just one of many up-and-comers in early-2000s R&B, he downplays swaggering bravado in favor of a more amiable confidence, and this quality makes him a clear standout in the crowd.

The disc not only bridges the stylistic gap between Marvin Gaye and R. Kelly, it warmly introduces hip-hop soul's finest new voice." Trey Songz- I Gotta Make It I absolutely love this album. The fact that Trey Songz wrote each and every song himself is simply refreshing. You don't see many young, upcoming R&B artists as dedicated to their work as he is. Good job Trey. Can't wait for your sophomore album "Trey Day" to come out in stores! Keep up the good work! LOVE YOU LOTS! Submitted by itszANGELA (BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, USA BABY! ALL DAY EVERYDAY!) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Disturbing Tha Peace Presents Bobby Valentino CD (2005)
I Gotta Make It
$11.99 Soul man Bobby Valentino, the first R&B star on Ludacris's Disturbing Tha Peace label, may have seemed an overnight success when his hit "Slow Down" rocketed up the charts in 2005. However, there is a reason Valentino's self-titled album sounds more richly honed than most debuts. Like Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and other R&B artists whose breakout records revealed a deeper history, Bobby Valentino knocked around the music world for years (primarily as member of the 1990s vocal group Mista) before Ludacris signed the Mississippi-born singer.
The experience ...
| | Ying Yang Twins United State Of Atlanta CD (2005)
I Gotta Make It
$14.15 Like Outkast, the Ying Yang Twins are progenitors of southern hip-hop that's a mix of gangsta rap, party jams, and jittery beats, and on UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA the Ying Yang Twins approach the game like a house party thrown in a recording studio. For starters, the wide variety of guests popping up throughout this 70-minute-plus project adds a feeling of randomness, recklessness, and fun. Neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton provides some honeyed vocals on the gospel-flavored "Long Time," and Maroon 5's Adam Levine holds his own on the electro-funk of "Live Again," with its nod to the travails of exotic dancers. There's also plenty of support from Dirty South brethren such as Mike Jones & Mr. Collipark (on "Badd"), and tough gal Jacki-O ...

| | Jon Lucien Endless Is Love CD (1997)
I Gotta Make It
$14.45 Endless Is Love represents a return to form for Jon Lucien after two hit-or-miss efforts by Mercury to turn him into an R&B singer. Lucien's milieu is more jazz-influenced, and he's right at home in musical settings with Chuck Loeb and John Lee, as well as with a few of his own producers. His deep baritone works best when singing romantic songs, of which there are plenty here, and the arrangements combine R&B, jazz and world music. The disc is dedicated to his daughter Dalila, who perished in the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996. Lucien deserves to be rediscovered by the smooth jazz crowd. ~ Frank Federico
