For a group that released nine studio albums between 1976 and 1990, you have to figure that Y&T must have a few tracks that slipped through the cracks over the years, right? You are indeed correct, as the 2005 compilation, Unearthed, Vol. 1 collects 17 of these rarities. As far as pop-metal bands of the '80s go, Y&T had the hooks, the choruses, the riffs, and the party-hearty persona to do battle with the chart-topping Mötley Crües and Quiet Riots of the world, but for some reason, they managed to slip through the cracks. This remains puzzling, especially since most of the outtakes here prove stronger than the "hits" from the third-generation hair metal bands that MTV was plugging from 1988-1991. Included are such hard rockers as "Shout It Out," "Standing in the Fire," and "Shake Down" (proving that not all '80s-era pop-metal acts lacked cajones), as well as the obligatory power ballad, "In the Name of Love." While most outtakes albums usually come off as sounding like thrown-together affairs -- with little sonic continuity running through the track listing -- Y&T's Unearthed, Vol. 1 is an exception. In fact, it comes off as a long-lost studio album from their peak '80s period. ~ Greg Prato

| | Gary Numan Pleasure Principle: 30th Anniversary Edition CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Unearthed, Vol. 1 music CDs
$10.15 THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE contains seven bonus tracks which includes demo out-takes and `B' side singles.
Gary Numan's most commercially successful album is, perhaps unsurprisingly, his least representative disc. Powered by the hit single "Cars," arguably the first British synth-pop song to dent the US charts (M's "Pop Muzik" came out around the same time), THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE is a striking turnaround from the guitar-powered, Joy Division-like post-punk of his old band Tubeway Army. Aside from Paul Gardiner's bass and some percussion, every instrument is electronic.
To denote their futuristic simplicity the album's 10 songs are given one-word titles; they're all built on the same layers of analogue synthesizers and futuristic, dystopian lyrics. The album's resulting numbing quality is also pretty much its point. This Cleopatra reissue has seven bonus tracks, including demo outtakes, live tracks, B-sides, and, oddly, a song from a seven-inch single given away with the first pressing of Numan's next album, TELEKON.
The most popular of all the Gary Numan albums is undeniably 1979's The Pleasure Principle. The reasons are simple -- there is not a single weak moment on the ...

| | Michele Thomas I'll Take Romance CD (2006)
Unearthed, Vol. 1 CD music
$9.35 Michele has been performing jazz in Chicago for over a decade. In that time she has managed to perform at such legendary venues as Chicago's own Green Mill, and worked with such well-known musicians as bassists Kelly Sill and Michael Arnopol, and pianist Ryan Cohen. Recognized for her "Ella-esque" tone and the musical coloring of "Sarah", Michele Thomas brings a vibrant spirit to the voice of jazz. With her warm, heartfelt delivery and mean scat solos, she has won over the hearts of her fans and the jazz community! She, like many of the great singers, grew up singing gospel music in the church. But for the last few years, Michele Thomas has zealously pursued finding her voice in the jazz idiom; so much so that she has already caught the attention of such distinguished jazz vocalists as Kevin Mahogany and Sheila Jordan. The daughter of a minister and the progeny of Chicago's gospel saturated Church of God In Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) denomination; Michele's musicality was nurtured and developed in significant ways. From the time she was a small child she sang in her school choir, nurturing her passion for harmonies and improvisation. By the time she entered junior high, Michele was a member of the Chicago All-City choir and in her junior year of high school, she won a scholarship to study voice at the Sherwood Music Conservatory of Music. It was that same year that Michele joined her high school jazz band and discovered her passion for jazz. When Michele went to college she continued her music studies, fervently striving to bring all the types of music she loved into her learning experience. From her dedication towards her classical training, to her participation in the university's jazz band--where she brought home an award for "Most Outstanding Individual Performance" from the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival--Michele gave herself to many musical genres. ...
