Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. Fans of the British improvising saxophonist Lol Coxhill are used to his unfettered, wild and squawky style, rivaled only by Evan Parker and inspired by Eric Dolphy and Steve Lacy. Those of you who appreciate Coxhill's lunatic fringe style will notice on Echoes of Duneden a refined and restrained approach on this CD, as well as the more extroverted musings he pioneered. In three duets totaling only 34 minutes with electric guitarist G.F. Fitz-Gerald, soprano saxophonist Coxhill creates a sonic palate ranging from completely free to actually constrained, melodic, thematic, and even tuneful constructs. Fitz-Gerald is a player whose concept depends on effects rather than musicality or technique, utilizing an array of echo, reverb, and sustained axioms more than chords of notated lines. In some ways it is a disturbing style, but no more so than when Coxhill cuts loose, as on the short intro track "Fairy Dance," where bird-like twitters, trills, and sighs sidle up next to Fitz-Gerald's ricocheted blasts. The title track, clocking in at 14 minutes, is an exercise morphed into two notes, many, or none. The varying tones, timbres, and moods suggest both war and fantasy, especially from Coxhill's expressive soprano and bold scattered excursions into music and noise phrasings.
