Straight Ahead Blues? album
$13.79 A strong singer, E.G. Kight is probably most notable for her intelligent and varied lyrics which deal with love lost and won, along with other universal topics. On Southern Comfort, her music ranges from lowdown blues and blues ballads to a couple of numbers with a gospel feel. Guitarist Bill Hinds takes some fine solos along the way, the rhythm ...
| | Ronnie Earl Duke Meets The Earl CD (2005)
Straight Ahead Blues? CD music
$18.59 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's in the right, leading to some wonderful guitar dialogues, particularly on an epic, nearly 16-minute-long version of Walter Price's "My Tears." Another extended workout occurs on "A Soul That's Been Abused," an Earl original, which features McClain on vocals and stretches out to just over 13 minutes. McGriff brings his Hammond B-3 magic to two cuts, Eddie Taylor's "Lookin' for Trouble" and B.B. King's "I Need You So Bad," while the B-3 part on "A Soul That's Been Abused" is handled by Dave Limina. ...

| | Gary Hirstius Down River CD (2004)
Straight Ahead Blues? songs
$11.15 The people of New Orleans have always been surrounded by music, especially Gary Hirstius. Besides the natural influence of being born and raised in a city so rich in musical heritage and style, his father is a trumpet player in the real-deal Storyville Dixieland Jazz Band. There were always combinations of guitar, trumpets, and drums lying around the house and at age 14, Gary started to gig with his guitar. By 17 he was playing on Bourbon Street, holding musical residence at the world famous strip club Big Daddy's. It wasn't long before Gary found himself playing what he calls the "Bayou Circuit," the small cities and towns of the swampy and wild Cajun country south of New Orleans. It is an easy and characteristic process to become jaded with such consistent playing and it didn't take long for Gary to realize he needed something else to happen, something new. An ex-cop cousin who was employed as a detective gave Gary an introduction to the alternative that he sought. At the age of 21, with no experience and no training, Gary Hirstius began his other calling - private investigation. Like music, detective work came naturally. He soon had himself dual careers - his songs and stage energy ...
