Sagas Of Iceland album
$15.15 Yes brings its sweeping brand of art rock to new heights with MAGNIFICATION, the band's first orchestral album since 1970's TIME AND A WORD. The tried and true quartet of Anderson, Squire, Howe, and White have done justice to this album's title; their latest sonic landscape is both magnified and enhanced by composer/arranger Larry Groupe. Groupe's role so symbiotic and integral it's as if he's a longtime band member in Yes and his instrument is the orchestra he conducts.
What sets MAGNIFICATION apart from your typical rock-band-with-orchestra project is the arrangements. Rather than adding clutter or tacky overstatement, the orchestral parts take on a voice that at times acts as subtle foundation, and finds the perfect moments to act as a lead "instrument." The title track strolls with majesty, following with the crushing emotional crescendos of "Spirit of Survival." The trademark Yes chorus is splendidly present on "Don't Go," which breaks into a quirky, theatric mid-section. A dramatic score opens "Give Love Each Day" as the band shows a beauty and restraint lacking in many of their progressive rock contemporaries. The epic suite "In The Presence Of" shows just how influential Yes has been in setting the standards that define their genre.

| | Very Best Of Supertramp CD (1992) Remastered
Sagas Of Iceland CD music
$11.49 Though Supertramp eventually broke through in the US as radio-friendly pop-rockers, they started out in the prog-rock mode, turning out lengthy songs full of fanciful instrumental interludes. Even at their proggiest, though, they always interjected a discernible Beatlesque pop sensibility that kept them well away from the excesses often associated with prog rock. THE VERY BEST OF SUPERTRAMP offers a handy career overview of the band's stylistic evolution. "Crime of the Century" shows the group at its most expansive and conceptual, but the bulk of this collection is in fact occupied by concise, well-crafted tunes full of infectious melodies, propulsive keyboards, and the tasty interjections of John Anthony Helliwell's saxophone. By the time they'd gotten around to their 1980s hit "It's Raining Again," Supertramp had fully transformed into a straight-ahead pop group, their McCartney-like tendencies coming fully to the fore. For most former art-rockers, this might have been a woeful ...
| | Gamma 1 CD (1979) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Sagas Of Iceland music CDs
$41.75 For Gamma's debut on Elektra, the band picked Mickey Newbury's "Wish I Was" and Hollies/Linda Ronstadt songwriter Clint Ballard Jr.'s "I'm Alive," when maybe Newbury's "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" would have been more appropriate. As far as Ballard's contribution goes, the more familiar "You're No Good" might've worked better than "I'm Alive," creativity not being Gamma's strong suit. With such a cool name as Gamma, the rays that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, one might expect Ronnie Montrose to come up with a nice mutated blend of hard-edged Pink Floyd meets Hawkwind. No such luck. The opening track, "Thunder and Lightning," has all the pedestrian elements of a marriage between Foreigner and Bad Company, the mainstream meets the mundane. Ken Scott's production work leaves empty spaces in between the guitar crunch and the keyboard fills, with the work feeling unfinished or rushed. The Hollies' "I'm Alive" is better suited to that band; ...

| | Burmese Split CD CD (2004)
Sagas Of Iceland album
$9.85 Crucial Blast regrets to announce the end of your hearing. The good news is, you'll lose it after getting beaten mercilessly by the upcoming BURMESE/FISTULA split CD.Apocalyptic feedback blast tantrums from the Burmese boys.Ohio's favorite sons give us their best material yet of gnarly, diseased, and completely catchy sludge|crust|rock.Burmese burn you down; Fistula p***es on your ashes. Hail the low frequency berserker.
One of those unorthodox musical endeavors which many might dismiss as a crude joke (or, well, utter sh*te), San Francisco's Burmese preoccupy themselves with churning out what alternately sounds like industrial white noise and Napalm Death-styled grindcore, fed through a metaphorical drainer of screeching feedback and distortion. Therefore, the overall effect of these ten songs (most lasting mere seconds) is highly original, but nerve-shattering and disorienting to the point of inducing seizures -- so watch out! Conversely, the comparative squares who make up Akron, Ohio's Fistula manage only four, more "normal" length offerings for the second half of this split release. Of course, as is only fitting, theirs too is a ...
| | Death By Stereo Death For Life CD (2005)
Sagas Of Iceland CD music
$11.65 On Death for Life, Death By Stereo continue to fuel their hardcore-derived stutter with the tenets of metal and thrash. Vocalist Efrem Shulz channels hardcore's urgency on "I Give My Life" and "Forget Regret," but the songs also feature stinging guitar solos right out of the heavy metal handbook, and the latter is close to early Faith No More. Even with all of this, as well as Shulz's always overdone vocals, Death for Life is more streamlined than a lot of metalcore records. It's like there needs to be a surplus of manic creativity to get that specialized designation, to the point that songs are a little too crammed with their own ambition. Death By Stereo take the opposite approach. They always incorporate their usual morbidity, metal, and hardcore bite. But they also keep the equation hovering -- like a skull perched on a torch -- for a unique kind of intensity. "This Curse of Days" puts a foreboding backing chorus behind its lyrics about winter bringing death for a subtle nod to European metal; "Middle Fingers" wavers between an agonizing distortion crawl and explosive choruses ("You're gonna die/We're here to stay" is its message); and "Don't Piss on My Neck and Tell Me It's Raining" fulfills the band's quota for acerbic song titles. "W.W.J.D.?" is probably the closest Death for Life gets to classicist ...
