Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller. Of course, the success of Brothers in Arms was helped considerably by the clever computer-animated video for "Money for Nothing," a sardonic attack on MTV. But what kept the record selling was Mark Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft -- "Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy up-tempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and the down-tempo, Everly Brothers-style "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely. Dire Straits had never been so concise or pop-oriented, and it wore well on them. Though they couldn't maintain that consistency through the rest of the album -- only the jazzy "Your Latest Trick" and the flinty "Ride Across the River" make an impact -- Brothers in Arms remains one of their most focused and accomplished albums, and in its succinct pop sense, it's distinctive within their catalog. [In 2005 Mercury released a 20th anniversary limited edition version of Brothers in Arms in the Hybrid/SACD format.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine BROTHERS IN ARMS found Dire Straits at the peak of a long climb in the music industry. After an auspicious debut with DIRE STRAITS, they stuggled on through personnel changes and shifting musical tastes. Knopfler's work with Bob Dylan (SLOW TRAIN COMING and some touring) and the band's appearance at Live Aid helped to keep their recognition high. This album proved to be the payoff, as "Money For Nothing" hit number 1, and the second single, "Walk Of Life" also made the top-10.

INCREDIBLE 5.1 MIX I first purchased this CD back in 1985 during it's first release. It sounded great in it's DDD format back then. Now, withit's SACD 5.1 surround mix it's as if I was sitting on stage with the band. A must buy if you're a Dire Straits fan!! Submitted by Mike (San Clemente, Ca, USA) Was This Review Helpful? | | Toward The Within CD (1994) Remastered; Sacd Hybrid
Brothers In Arms
$17.29 SACD Hybrid Remastered CD of the 1994 album Toward The Within is the only official live album of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's Dead Can Dance. It contains 15 songs, of which only four appeared on their previous albums, and two of which were later re-recorded and included on Lisa Gerrard's first solo album, The Mirror Pool. The others previously existed only in live performances and unofficial bootlegs, but were not officially released until Toward the Within. Along with Perry and Gerrard were a number of musicians who had performed with them on other occasions.14 tracks.
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard (vocals, yang ch'in, percussion), Brendan Perry (vocals, guitar, percussion, whistle, Irish bouzouki), Robert Perry (uillean pipes, Irish bouzouki, whistle, percussion), Andrew Claxton (keyboards), John Bonnar (keyboards, vocals, percussion), Lance Hogan (bass, guitar, percussion, vocals), Ronan O'Snodaigh (percussion, vocals). A large reason that Dead Can Dance tours and performances were so praised by hardcore fans lay in the band's welcome preference for unknown and otherwise unheard material, rather than simply rehashing expected numbers. Bootlegging of these tracks and performances was understandable and widespread, so involved and passionate was the band's following. Recorded at a Los Angeles performance from the Into the Labyrinth tour, the astounding Toward the Within shows that the band's magic was clearly not simply something created in studio. Both lead performers are simply in excelsis, their vocal abilities hardly diminished by the rigors of the road -- if anything, they sound even more inspired as a result. The range of instruments tackled is testimony to the group's breadth, from the yang ch'in, a Chinese equivalent to hammered dulcimer, to a wide range of drums. As for the songs, only four of the fifteen had been officially released before, including fine takes on "Cantara," "Song of the Sibyl" and "Yulunga (Spirit Dance)." As for the numerous new delights, Perry has a number of solo or near-solo tracks he performs with acoustic guitar. These include the lovely "American Dreaming" and the mystical set-closing "Don't Fade Away," calling to mind Tim Buckley's sense of scope and vision. Gerrard's unquestioned highlight is the combination of "Tristan" and "Sanvean," the latter of which is an awesome, widescreen number that became an undisputed highlight on her solo debut The Mirror Pool. Perhaps ...
