With the exception of the lead singer, Transplants is composed of ex-members of Rancid and Blink 182. The band's sophomore release HAUNTED CITIES straddles the line between punk, rock-rap, and alternative pop. The latter is best epitomized by "Gangsters and Thugs," a tune that sounds like it could have appeared among outtakes from Beck's ODELAY.
However, this album points mostly in the direction of a punk revival, only with crunchier guitars, heavier vocal rants, and chunkier drum beats. For example, "American Guns" mixes Shane MacGowan-style vocals with messy guitars and a driving bass pattern. But just when you think you've pigeon-holed the group, Transplants switches gears again. On "Hit The Fence" the band combines Beastie Boys-influenced rap with a menacing piano motif. The last track on the album, "Crash and Burn," even uses Afro-Cuban piano riffs. Featuring guest vocal performances by hip-hop stars Sen Dog and B. Real (from Cypress Hill), this release is sure to remain a favorite with those who love to hear genres combined freely and without apology.
Transplants: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar); Rob "SR" Aston (vocals); Travis Barker (drums, percussion, loops).
Additional personnel: Ganxsta Ridd, Godfather, Rakaa, Sen Dog, B Real, Baby Down (vocals); Dave Carlock (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass guitar, background vocals); Victor Ruggiero (Farfisa, Wurlitzer organ); Matt Freeman (bass guitar); Scott Abels (percussion).
CMJ (No. 920, p.5) - "Punk and hip-hop have a lot in common, and few bands have bridged this gap so effortlessly." Haunted Cities music CDs
$18.95 Combining a traditionalist approach with a slightly modern sheen, the Slack Family's debut album finds them hitting hard with a driving, straightforward attack. Joined by fiddler James Bailey of the Country Gentlemen, this is an extraordinarily tight band, becoming downright virtuosic on Earl Scruggs' "Groundspeed" and Sonny Osborne's "Sledride." Though the Slack Family boast excellent three-part harmonies and a nice, clean swinging melodic sound similar to that of Front Range, they never quite reach the same level of vocal dynamics or musical eclecticism. Still, that should hardly be taken as a criticism, as those who love the huddle around two microphones mentality of bluegrass performances won't be disappointed by the Slack Family's approach. The smooth, relaxed originals "Train of Love" and "Caroline," both written by lead singer and guitarist Joe Wharff, are rather sweet tunes, with elements of pop melodicism fitting nicely with carefully driven rhythms. The retelling of the mythical bear in "Slewfoot," the tale of rural life lost in "Old Home Place," and the themes of mountain life in "Footprints Down the Hill" are indicative of the greater traditionalist aesthetic here, though it would probably be a stretch to say that the Slack Family embody the classic high and lonesome sound. Nonetheless, Slack Family Bluegrass Band is a consistently engaging listen that should appeal to purists and progressives alike. ~ Matt Fink
The SLACK FAMILY began life over ten years ago performing in the streets and back alleys of Richmond to enthusiastic, mesmerized bar hopping listeners. Eventually a wise and philanthropic bar owner invited them inside to reclaim his roving clientele, bestowed upon them the moniker "SLACK FAMILY" and hence a destiny was fulfilled. Today this family of "brothers from different mothers" is ever creating energetic, diverse and infectious music featuring three part vocal harmonies and a wide variety of indigenous influences that give more than a nod to the way "it used to was". This blend of traditional, contemporary and original tunes with mass appeal for all ages renders music their fans affectionately dub "slackgrass". The SLACK FAMILY has released three CD's. Their self titled debut "SLACK FAMILY BLUEGRASS BAND", "Pickin' up the Slack" and the newly released "Trains and Rain" recorded at Slipped Disc studios by Grammy award winning engineer Bill McElroy. These recordings capture the high-energy style of music the SLACK FAMILY is renowned for showcasing in their live shows. After years of performing in a wide variety of venues in and around the Commonwealth, the SLACK FAMILY is equally adept pickin' at your backyard ...
