Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, who probably was as responsible as anyone else in rehabilitating Germany's post-war world image. The Taragon label is re-releasing all of Kaempfert's many albums in an ambitious reissue project. This excellent compilation is the one to have however.

Nulla si conosce circa la storia dei musicisti dei SOLIDAMòR fino al giorno della nascita del gruppo. Si racconta che il casuale incontro in un negozio di strumenti musicali fra il cantante nonché leader indiscusso del gruppo, Andrea Ricci, nato a Napoli ma cresciuto a Milano, e il bassista milanese Fabio Del Torchio, detto “Freezer”, cambiò la vita di entrambi. Nel 2000 la casa del Ricci diventa sala prove e studio di registrazione dove rinchiudersi per mettere in musica le prime idee attingendo e ispirandosi al sottobosco di musica energica ma di qualità di Mano Negra, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Les Negresses Verts. Nel frattempo la famiglia si allarga con l’arrivo del pianista nonché tecnico del suono Lorenzo Picinali, in arte “Il Pizza”, e i tre, con l’aiuto di alcuni amici quali Simone Lo Porto e Luigi Pecere, non esitano a incidere un primo disco autoprodotto. La nascita di “Matricula Italiana”, questo il nome dell’album, è seguita da un avventuroso tour promozionale in Francia e Spagna che partito da Avignone ha raggiunto Barcellona, Tarifa e San Sebastian... Si racconta che, nel frattempo, un affermato chitarrista sardo, Diego Asuni, decise di abbandonare sole e mare per trasferirsi a Milano. Pochi giorni dopo lo sbarco, recatosi a trovare l’amico di vecchia data Andrea Ricci, sentì per la prima volta la musica dei Solidamòr e se ne innamorò. Da allora nessun altro musicista ha mai potuto dire di essere stato il chitarrista dei Solidamòr. Numerosi invece sono stati i musicisti che si sono seduti alla batteria: Matteo, Poncharello e Pietro di professione autista dell’atm (che veniva alle prove “guidando la 90”). Matteo è alla batteria alla prima uscita milanese del gruppo in un Rolling Stone affollatissimo. Si dice che quella serata fu indimenticabile non solo per l’apprezzamento del pubblico ma perché la piccola grande famiglia Solidamòr ebbe la fortuna di conoscere un formidabile trombettista Stefano Iascone, in arte “Iasko”, che, da allora, entrò a far parte dell’organico diventando un uomo ...
