Billie Holiday album
$63.49 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might be somewhat disappointed ...
| | Bebel Gilberto All In One CD (2009)
Billie Holiday CD music
$12.05 With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing is superstar producer Mark Ronson for the single "The Real Thing," a song whose history hits a sweet spot here--Stevie Wonder originally wrote it in the late '70s for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77. Ronson takes the song back to Wonder's Motown roots, also quoting from Saint Etienne's vibrant update of classic soul production. Gilberto sounds most confident elsewhere, however, especially on her own songs and ...

| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
Billie Holiday album
$10.45 Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"--it all bespeaks an uncommon coolness that was Martin's to burn. DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN catches all of his best-known tunes, from the aforementioned gems to the perennial Reprise-era sing-along "Everybody Loves Somebody," but it fills ...
| | George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD (2003) Remastered
Billie Holiday CD music
$10.19 Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman.
Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', namely "This Masquerade," which charted at number one on pop and R&B in Billboard, and its follow-up, the album's title track, kick the album off along with "On Broadway" and "The Greatest Love of All." But there are many stops along the way to the present from that 1976 issue, such as Benson's singularly beautiful read of "Unchained Melody,"
The vocal superstar & jazz guitar legend's most popular hits showcased on a TV marketed single-disc compilation of timeless music! 19 remastered tracks, more than 75 minutes of magic.
Claus Ogerman, Quincy Jones, Mike Mainieri (arranger); Gary Herbig (saxophone, flute); Jerry Hey, Chuck Findley (trumpet); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); Greg Phillinganes (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Ronnie Foster (electric piano, synthesizer, keyboards); Herbie Hancock (electric piano); ...

| | Dean Evenson Back To The Garden CD (1997)
Billie Holiday songs
$13.95 Back to the Garden reflects a yearning for -- and/or a return to -- simpler times. Dean Evenson and Tom Barabas have created a set of psychoactive compositions that tunes to the simplicity of the new age -- spiritually and holistically. Evenson and Barabas embrace all the qualities of the holistic new age with no hesitation and no shame. This disc's only drawbacks -- if, indeed, they are drawbacks -- are its steadfast dedication to its purpose and its sincerity. Both of these artists have true desires for their music to reach and, ideally, to heal the world. So, if every listener allows it to heal his or her corner of the world and shares it with one other person, it is achievable, albeit exponentially mind-boggling. This special disc will appeal to fans of Lisa Lynne, Susan Craig Winsberg, Riley Lee, and Stan Richardson. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | Art Blakey Drums Around The Corner CD (1959)
Billie Holiday CD music
$10.09 DRUMS AROUND THE CORNER is a previously unreleased recording.
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur Series.
This rare session, finally released in 1999, represents some of the most powerful drumming by Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Philly Joe Jones. Gathered together under Blakey's leadership, these three legendary drummers, conga master Ray Barretto, and Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt from the Jazz Messengers all converge into a stunning ensemble unlike any that had come before. Each piece not only offers swinging grooves and dynamic interaction between the musicians, but Blakey, Haynes, Jones, and Barretto each take turns propelling the group and soloing in his own signature way.
Blakey's legendary strength, Haynes' snap-crackle-pop, and Jones' melodic invention are all evident as they each produce mesmerizing improvisations, complimenting and topping each other as they go. Whether on Bird's "Moose The Mooche," the free-flowing "Drums In The Rain," or the standard "Lover," the focus here is on the primal energy of the drum and its legitimacy as an essential source of music. Also included are "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," both of which are electrifying duets between Blakey and bassist Paul Chambers. For drumming fans, there is little left to ask for from this priceless collection.
Digitaly remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
Recorded at Manhattan Towers, New York, New York on November 2, 1958 and the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on March 29, 1959. Includes liner notes by Kenny Washington.

| | Divasonic Changing Wind CD (2008)
Billie Holiday album
$12.69 Multi-instrumentalist/producer/songwriter Lynda Arnold has been performing and producing as Divasonic since 2000. She bounces back and forth between programming, flute, piano, singing and engineering her sounds and arrangements to mold music that is truly her own. The sound of Divasonic touches many different genres of music and is not easily categorized. Twisted loops mash with straight grooves and synths combine with classically infused flute and keyboard improvisations. Original lyrics derived from her poetry often touch on spiritual themes and her love drama of the moment. Her voice teaches and teases you, winding around the layered textures and with an attractive rawness. Experimentation is key to the development of the Divasonic sound as well as collaboration and performance with other talented musicians in an attempt to redefine the concept of song.Changing Wind is an outlet for contemplations about relationships, including the ups and downs of “elations, surprises, sensuality, reality, growth, partnership, nurturing, falling in love, and enduring love through its changes.” It also stretches a bit further musically, showing off a stronger jazz influence mixed with stronger soul and pop vibes, all wrapped around the elements Lynda has come to be known for, including drum-and-bass rhythms, experimental percussive sounds, and flute and vocal melodies derived from her own poetry.Lynda describes the resulting mix as “atmospheric, electronic grooves,” which is hard to deny. It’s not the type of scattered and disjointed effort you might expect from someone with so many different talents and a palette that includes everything from Depeche Mode to Bjork to Tori Amos, and who is joined by a variety of friends and collaborators. Changing Wind displays a cohesive and irresistible feel, whether you want to get up and dance or just sit back and listen. From the infectious rhythms to the haunting melodies, every track stands out as fresh and invigorating.Changing Wind includes collaborations with such artists as producer ...
