Billie Holiday album
$13.34 Only Everything, David Sanborn's second album for Decca, feels like part two of his debut for the label, 2008's Here & Gone. That set was a tribute to Ray Charles and Hank Crawford -- the alto saxophonist who played with Charles in the '50s and early '60s, and influenced Sanborn tremendously. That set featured loads of vocals and tightly arranged tunes that were indicative of the performances of Charles' bands. Only Everything delves into more of that territory, but this time, Sanborn reflects more heavily on Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman, another legendary Charles ace from roughly the same period. The charts here allow for more soloing and offer a looser, more intimate, spontaneous feel. It contains only two vocal appearances: one by Joss Stone on a punchy "Let the Good Times Roll," and one by James Taylor in a unique interpretation of "Hallelujah I Love Her So." There are two different bands here -- one a septet with a horn section, the other an organ trio. Steve Gadd handles all the drum chores here, with Joey DeFrancesco as organist on all cuts. The larger group includes saxophonists Bob Malach and Frank Basile, with Teddy Kadleck on trumpet, and trombonist Mike Davis. The only original here is the title cut, a ballad for trio, while everything else is R&B-drenched, soul-inflected jazz that may have come from a somewhat distant era yet feels contemporary whether played in septet or trio format. Crawford's "The Peeper" is a soulful blues stutter with Sanborn's alto lead being punctuated mightily by the horn section underscoring the melody; DeFrancesco ...
| | Jimmy Haslip Blues For Tony CDs (2010)
Billie Holiday CD music
$18.34 When drummer Tony Williams died of a heart attack on February 23, 1997, at the relatively young age of 51, it was a tremendous loss for straight-ahead post-bop and hard bop as well as for fusion. Williams had numerous acoustic jazz credentials (including his contributions to Miles Davis' legendary mid-`60s quartet), and his band Lifetime was one of the most important fusion outfits of the `70s. The late drummer's fusion side is what electric guitarist Allan Holdsworth, electric bassist Jimmy Haslip (of Yellowjackets fame), keyboardist Alan Pasqua and drummer Chad Wackerman pay tribute to on Blues for Tony, an excellent two-CD set that was recorded live in 2007. Forming a quartet, the improvisers remember Williams not by trying to sound like a carbon copy of Lifetime, but rather, by celebrating the overall spirit of Williams' fusion output. Holdsworth, in fact, worked with Williams when he replaced John McLaughlin as Lifetime's guitarist in 1975; it was a brief association (Holdsworth left Lifetime the following year), although certainly a noteworthy one. And like Lifetime, this quartet (which performs mostly material by Holdsworth and Pasqua) demonstrates that being influenced by rock and funk and making ...

| | Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Billie Holiday album
$6.49 The crown jewel of the epic Evans/Davis triptych that began with MILES AHEAD and PORGY AND BESS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN is as emotionally compelling as any performance in the trumpeter's remarkable body of works. Combining as it does the emotional gravity of two cultures--the deep song of flamenco music and the rich lament of the blues--SKETCHES OF SPAIN is a musical hybrid of enormous power and beauty. Gil Evans' immense canvas of orchestral colors inspires some of Davis' most deeply felt solo flights. He paints vast vistas of velvety, shimmering night sounds, and through it all runs the mountainous backbone of Spain's native rhythms and chants.
The centerpiece of SKETCHES OF SPAIN is the Evans/Davis treatment of the second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez." Evans' charts engage Davis in a shifting, insistent dialogue, italicizing the trumpeter's subtle variations and timbral ecstasies with magnificent orchestral flourishes. The surreal patina of three flutes and harp, high muted trumpets and woodwinds, and subterranean trombones, French horns and tuba that define one of the main variations on the theme, is a majestic foil for Davis' expressive tones.
Gil Evans liked to say that after Louis Armstrong, no one had affected the sound of the trumpet like Miles Davis. Miles fashioned a vibrato-less, introspective brass cry, made all the more lovely by his lush use of the middle and lower registers. Davis' manipulation of pitch on "Saeta" and "Solea" is so idiomatic, so vocalized, so full of revel and lament, it pierces your ...
| | Charles Mingus Mingus Ah Um CD (1959) Remastered
Billie Holiday CD music
$6.75 This remastered edition of MINGUS AH UM features six of the original tracks in unedited form and three bonus tracks.
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
One of the five essential Mingus albums to own, and even if you are not a jazz fan this is still worthy of being in any comprehensive collection. The opening track, "Better Git It In Your Soul," rushes along at a furious pace and then there is a wonderful change of tempo into an a cappella and handclap pause. It rolls on, of course, but the nature of this track reflects the nature of Mingus who never failed to experiment (even though sometimes he failed). The personnel comprises John Handy III, Shafi Hadi and Booker Ervin (saxophones), Horace Parlan Jr (piano), Willie Dennis and James Knepper (trombones) and Charles Richmond ...

| | Dean Evenson Back To The Garden CD (1997)
Billie Holiday songs
$13.95 Back to the Garden reflects a yearning for -- and/or a return to -- simpler times. Dean Evenson and Tom Barabas have created a set of psychoactive compositions that tunes to the simplicity of the new age -- spiritually and holistically. Evenson and Barabas embrace all the qualities of the holistic new age with no hesitation and no shame. This disc's only drawbacks -- if, indeed, they are drawbacks -- are its steadfast dedication to its purpose and its sincerity. Both of these artists have true desires for their music to reach and, ideally, to heal the world. So, if every listener allows it to heal his or her corner of the world and shares it with one other person, it is achievable, albeit exponentially mind-boggling. This special disc will ...

| | Art Blakey Drums Around The Corner CD (1959)
Billie Holiday CD music
$10.09 DRUMS AROUND THE CORNER is a previously unreleased recording.
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur Series.
This rare session, finally released in 1999, represents some of the most powerful drumming by Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Philly Joe Jones. Gathered together under Blakey's leadership, these three legendary drummers, conga master Ray Barretto, and Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt from the Jazz Messengers all converge into a stunning ensemble unlike any that had come before. Each piece not only offers swinging grooves and dynamic interaction between the musicians, but Blakey, Haynes, Jones, and Barretto each take turns propelling the group and soloing in his own signature way.
Blakey's legendary strength, Haynes' snap-crackle-pop, and Jones' melodic invention are all evident as they each produce mesmerizing improvisations, complimenting and topping each other as they go. Whether on Bird's "Moose The Mooche," the free-flowing "Drums In The Rain," or the standard "Lover," the focus here is on the primal energy of the drum and its legitimacy as an essential source of music. Also included are "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," both of which are electrifying duets between Blakey and bassist Paul Chambers. For drumming fans, there is little left to ask for from this priceless collection.
Digitaly remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
Recorded at Manhattan Towers, New York, New York on November 2, 1958 and the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on March 29, 1959. Includes liner notes by Kenny Washington.

| | Divasonic Changing Wind CD (2008)
Billie Holiday album
$12.69 Multi-instrumentalist/producer/songwriter Lynda Arnold has been performing and producing as Divasonic since 2000. She bounces back and forth between programming, flute, piano, singing and engineering her sounds and arrangements to mold music that is truly her own. The sound of Divasonic touches many different genres of music and is not easily categorized. Twisted loops mash with straight grooves and synths combine with classically infused flute and keyboard improvisations. Original lyrics derived from her poetry often touch on spiritual themes and her love drama of the moment. Her voice teaches and teases you, winding around the layered textures and with an attractive rawness. Experimentation is key to the development of the Divasonic sound as well as collaboration and performance with other talented musicians in an attempt to redefine the concept of song.Changing Wind is an outlet for contemplations about relationships, including the ups and downs of "elations, surprises, sensuality, reality, growth, partnership, nurturing, falling in love, and enduring love through its changes." It also stretches a bit further musically, showing off a stronger jazz influence mixed with stronger soul and pop vibes, all wrapped around the elements Lynda has come to be known for, including drum-and-bass rhythms, experimental percussive sounds, and flute and vocal melodies derived from her own poetry. Lynda describes the resulting mix as "atmospheric, electronic grooves," which is hard to deny. It's not the type of scattered and disjointed effort you might expect from someone with so many different talents and a palette that includes everything from Depeche Mode to Bjork to Tori Amos, and who is joined by a variety of friends and collaborators. Changing Wind displays a cohesive and irresistible feel, whether you want to get up and dance or just sit back and listen. From the infectious rhythms to the haunting melodies, ...
