$11.45 In the manner of Natalie Cole's UNFORGETTABLE, Elvis Presley's CHRISTMAS DUETS is a collection of Christmas songs that Elvis recorded throughout his career, remixed in 2008 to add new vocal parts by many of today's biggest female country stars, some of whom had not yet been born when Elvis died in 1977. Other guests include Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John, the only two vocalists here whose careers intersected with Elvis chronologically.

| | Taylor Swift Fearless CD (2008) Enhanced CD
Merle Haggard music CDs
$14.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country--there aren't fiddles here, there are violins--yet the production never feels garish, a crass attempt at a crossover success. It's small-scale and sweetly tuneful, always seeming humble even when the power ballads build to a big close. Swift's gentle touch is as enduring as her songcraft, and this musical maturity may not quite jibe with her age but it does help make FEARLESS one of the best mainstream pop albums of 2008.
Personnel: Taylor Swift (vocals, guitar); Nathan Chapman (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, keyboards); Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Grant Mickelson, Kenny Greenberg (electric guitar); Ilya Toshinsky (banjo); Claire Indie (cello); Tony Harrell (piano, Hammond ...
| | Hank Williams, Jr Hank Live CD (1987)
Merle Haggard songs
$5.65 LIVE features Hank Williams Jr. at the height of his '80s fame, recorded in concert on a couple of good, rowdy, obviously beer-soaked nights. Along with the hits you'd expect, such as "If You Don't Like Hank Williams" and "The Conversation," Hank Jr. also offers up several country-rock and blues covers.
Included here are two songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, a romp through George Thorogood's "I Really Like Girls," and a definitive recreation of Z.Z. Top's "La Grange." Surprisingly, the bulk of the album is devoted a nine-song acoustic solo segment, with lots of audience sing-along interaction, particularly on "If Heaven Ain't a Lot Like Dixie," and "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)."
Personnel: Hank Williams Jr., Merle Kilgore (vocals); Eddie Long, Lamar Morris, Wayne Turner (guitar); ...

| | NOFX Coaster CD (2009)
Merle Haggard album
$8.29 Although they've built their long career on a foundation of jokey, melodic punk rock, California mainstay NOFX have slowly but surely allowed a surprising depth to enter their songwriting. Their 11th album, COASTER, recorded yet again for their own successful Fat Wreck Chords label, certainly has its goofy moments, such as the Tegan & Sara-baiting "Creeping Out Sara" and the Christian-skewering reggae of "Best God in Show," but their sardonic wit is now often used for larger purposes. Songs like the autobiographical "My Orphan Year," about the death of singer Fat Mike's parents, and the gritty street-punk of "We Called it America" display a sharper grasp of adult concerns than NOFX are generally given credit for. No matter how serious they get, however, the music is, as always, exhilarating, top-flight punk reminiscent of '80s SoCal giants like the Descendents and Adolescents.
