(17 Customer Reviews)
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Since 1981's TORCH, Carly Simon has recorded three more collections of pre-rock standards. 2005's MOONLIGHT SERENADE is the best of the lot, and one of the best albums of standards yet recorded by a singer of Simon's generation. It beats the pants off of similar sets by Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, for example. For one thing, Simon is simply a great singer, even at this late stage in her career; she's taken care of her instrument, and her tone throughout MOONLIGHT SERENADE is superb, as is her increasingly jazzy and unconventional phrasing. (Listen to her subtle but effective vibrato on "All The Things You Are," for starters.) More importantly, Simon chooses songs to suit her voice, not her audience's expectations, which means that along withsuch familiar tunes as "I Only Have Eyes For You," listeners are treated to readings of relative obscurities like "My One and Only Love" instead of the umpteenth rendition of "Stardust."
This dualdisc reunites Carly with legendary performer Richard Perry. The release showcases Carly's dusky and sensual vocal stylings on 11 romantic standards penned by some of the world's greatest songwriters in Glenn Miller, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, JErome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein II, George & Ira Gershwin, and Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz. The DVD side includes the entire album in enhanced PCM stereo plus video footage of the making of the album.

Carly Simon Moonlight Serenade Songs Moonlight Serenade Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Wish there were 10 Stars or More. It's That Good! I stumbled upon Carly's new album today during my lunch break forgetting it was out yesterday. I decided to sample to see what new take she's done on these classic standards. My mouth dropped open! What a gorgeous album, and this was just from the 30 second samples! It is also my first DualDisc, so I am excited about the DVD side, but have to wait until I get home to see what it is all about.
This is an album that I am sure every ballroom dance couple, studio, etc, will be getting and wearing out! It makes you want to grab your partner and float on air. I don't think Carly has ever sounded better. Her version of "I Only Have Eyes For You" has now become my favorite, as it has been the Art Garfunkel cover for years that was my previous. Her beautiful alto fits so well with these classic standards, and the arrangements are top notch all the way. Definitely Grammy material for Best Tradition Pop Vocal. | | Jessica Radcliffe Beautiful Darkness: Celebrating The Winter CD (2001)
Moonlight Serenade CD music
$11.59 Released in 2000, Beautiful Darkness was one of the loveliest and most unusual holiday albums to come along in some time. It was a rare release, in that the people who made it -- Jessica Radcliffe, Lisa Ekström, and Martin Simpson -- seem to have made the album for artistic reasons, not commercial ones. The album also stood out because the participants offered an intelligent, deeply felt meditation on the Solstice -- as opposed to the Christmas -- celebration. One shouldn't approach Beautiful Darkness like a Bing Crosby record, filled with spirited songs and happy lyrics. Instead, the album is all of a musical piece, relying heavily on mood to portray the undercurrent of the long winter nights. The instrumental work is as spare as the leaf-less winter woods, with guitar, bells, cello, and accordion creating a deep, subtle atmosphere. Radcliffe handles most of the spoken-sung parts, and her fragile voice adds a touch of haunted ambience to the music. If one gains the impression that Beautiful Darkness' heavy mood is a contemplation on death, it's only a fitting subject for the Solstice season. For anyone prone to sitting before the fireplace in mediation during chilly evenings, Beautiful Darkness is a desirable companion. For those who are sick to death of the same old holiday offerings, Radcliffe, Ekström, and Simpson offer a refreshing change. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Anything that can be said about Jessica Radcliffe doesn't quite seem to do her justice. She is a poet, a pagan, a shaman, a singer steeped in tradition and a songwriter of deeply personal songs that illuminate the human experience and can also make you catch your breath with their beauty. Jessica was born in Los Angeles and was exposed to a diverse wealth of music through her family of Irish and Spanish heritage. She recalls learning Leadbelly tunes from her grandfather, who had a brief stay in jail with the blues legend. Jessica began writing poetry at an early age and naturally ventured forth into music playing her first show at thirteen. ...
| | Creole Bred: A Tribute To Creole & Zydeco CD (2004)
Moonlight Serenade music CDs
$15.05 A couple years after its compilation project matching rock and country singers with Cajun material and musicians (Evangeline Made), Vanguard Records applied the same concept to Creole and zydeco with Creole Bred. (In fact the same producer, Cajun music performer and scholar Ann Savoy, oversaw both records.) Although a few of these tracks are indeed performed by Creole/zydeco artists, for the most part they accompany artists from outside the genre on Creole/zydeco songs. The unlikely ...
