Personnel: Dave Valentin (flute); Dave Valentin; Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Lincoln Goines, Rubén Rodríguez (bass instrument); Robert Ameen (drums); Milton Cardona, Nicky Marrero (percussion); Bill O'Connell (piano); Richie Flores (percussion). Liner Note Author: Bobby Sanabria. Recording information: Knoop Music, River Edge, NJ (02/21/2005). Photographer: Rubén Rodríguez . The most unusual aspect of this release from flutist Dave Valentin is that he performs the two swing standards "I've Got the World on a String" and "I Remember You." The style of music Valentin plays is unchanged from his other CDs, being lightly funky, utilizing Latin rhythms, and having his flute on top much of the time. Baritonist Ronnie Cuber guests on "Passion Fruit," but otherwise Valentin is just joined by a large rhythm section with his usual pianist Bill O'Connell. He plays as fluently as usual and, although there are no other surprises, the music is pleasing, danceable, and reasonably creative. ~ Scott Yanow Dave Valentin World On A String Songs World On A String Review

World On A String
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what ...

| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
World On A String
$8.49 Personnel: Nathan Calvin (vocals). Audio Mixer: Terry Date. Recording information: Studio Litho, Seattle, WA. Editor: Ingrid Erickson. Arranger: Chris DeGarmo. It makes sense that Terry Date produced Catch Without Arms, Dredg's second record for Interscope. The producer is a veteran of Deftones albums, and it's that band's rich but still rocking palette that's the intent here. And they succeed. Like past Dredg releases Catch has a conceptual flow. But openers "Ode to the Sun" and "Bug Eyes" focus the grandeur and meandering pace of the band's past work around effective melodies and a steadiness in the rhythm. The choruses emphasize the Bono/Chino Moreno in ...

World On A String
$10.55 Chuck Hedges: Clarinet, Eddie Higgins: PianoBob Haggart: Bass, Gene Estes: DrumsCommentary by Eddie HigginsOn a warm, humid afternoon in December, 1992, a group of veteran jazz musicians gathered in Orlando, Florida to make a recording. Although all of them were friends and had worked together in various combinations before, this would be their first time in a recording studio as a quartet, and the producer was anxiously awaiting the first sign that his hunch was correct: ...

Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone, piano); Oscar Peterson (piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Stan Levey (drums). Recorded in Hollywood, California on October 15, 1957. Originally released on Verve (8274). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone, piano); Herb Ellis (guitar); Oscar Peterson (piano); Stan Levey (drums). Liner Note Authors: Nat Hentoff; Barry Alfonso. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA (10/15/1957). Photographers: Katherine Holzman Goldblatt; Burt Goldblatt. The by turns grizzled and vaporous-toned Webster really hit his stride on the Verve label. During a stretch from roughly 1953-1959, the Ellington alumnus showcased his supreme playing with both combos and string sections, swingers and ballads -- and lurking beneath his blustery and hulking sound were solo lines brimming with sophistication and wit. This 1957 date with the Oscar Peterson Trio is one of the highlights of that golden '50s run. After starting off with two bluesy originals -- the slow burning title track and gutsy "Late Date" -- Webster gets to the heart of things on five wistful ballads: Here, his exquisitely sly "Makin' Whoopee" ...
