Bette Davis, Agnes Moorehead, and Olivia de Havilland star. A jealous woman tries to drive her wealthy spinster cousin insane. Bette Davis plays Charlotte Hollis, a hermetic spinster haunted by memories of her murdered fiancé. Charlotte, whose only social contact is with her maid, Velma (Agnes Moorehead), is crushed to learn that the state wants to tear down her mansion and put up a highway in its place. She calls on her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland) for help, but Miriam fails to offer any assistance other than bringing in the family physician (Joseph Cotten) to have her troubled relative committed. As the nightmares of her fiancé continue to haunt her, Charlotte ends up fighting not only for the Hollis estate but for her sanity as well.
Director Robert Aldrich resumes the electric collaboration with Davis begun in the terrifying smash hit WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? Davis heads up the stellar cast (which includes Bruce Dern and George Kennedy in small, early roles and Mary Astor in her last film appearance) with a performance that radiates desperation, entrapment, and inevitable collapse. HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE provides a chilling investigation of a heartbreakingly demented mind. Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte Reviews: "Though Davis gives her standard spectacular performance, it's Ms. de Havilland who gets the chance here to show some range."
-- Dave Kehr, New York Times "Robert Aldrich's cast of great vets keeps mystery in the magnolia-scented air."

Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte Video Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte Movie Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) A performance to drive you over the edge...Literally. I first saw this movie when I was about 14 years old. And let me say that it was as powerful now as it was then and I am in my early 30's. Although I thought all the actors were great, it was Agnes Moorehead's performance that captured my attention the most. She made it easy to feel sorry for "Charlotte". And she made it believable to recognize that Charlotte's cousin played brilliantly by Olivia De Havilland was a wicked, selfish capital "B". This movie is superb in every way. From the script, to the plot and right down to the acting. Submitted by firefeenix73 (Tallahassee, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A very good movie.... All of the players do a superb job with this movie - there is not a discordant note anywhere in the acting. It had been many years since I had seen it and I had forgotten the ending so I was able to approach it again as a first viewing. The film certainly evokes the Old South and I particularly love the theme song running through the film. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to anyone. Best of the Best I guess that this is the only horror film that ever made me cry. you can't help but feel sorry for Charlotte in the end. Of course, the title song helps with this mood too. Patti Page's recording of "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" is really beautiful. Submitted by JBROWN43 (CORPUS CHRISTI, TX.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Davis vs. De Haviland in a Frightful Fight to the Finish! Originally intended as a sequel to WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (It went through the title changes "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO COUSIN CHARLOTTE?" and "HUSH NOW, SWEET CHARLOTTE"), producer/director Robert Aldrich went to the well again, drawing upon the talents of screenwriter Lukas Heller and novelist Henry Farrell. He wasn't as fortunate with his two leads, since the Davis/Crawford battle-of-the-bitches escalated to the next level after Davis' Oscar nomination for JANE. Some initial filming was done, but Crawford eventually begged off, forcing Aldrich to go begging at Olivia De Haviland's door. Luckily for him, she graciously agreed, and the rest is film history. We may never know if the movie would have worked as well or better with JANE'S two original leads, but as is, it's pretty much a Southern Gothic classic with all the trimmin's. It certainly helped that the strong supporting cast gave their best work, especially Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor in her final film appearance. Special mention should be given to Cecil Kellaway, one of the few sympathetic ears to whom the deranged and depressed Charlotte could turn. One very juicy piece of trivia: CHARLOTTE is the first film of Bruce Dern's ever seen by his then pre-teen daughter, Laura. You can only imagine what her reaction must've been to that first ten minutes, which was unbelievably violent even by today's standards... Submitted by cchase (Arlington, VA.) $10.29 DUEL, one of Steven Spielberg's first vehicles, foreshadowed the blockbuster film JAWS. Using minimal dialogue and effects, Spielberg defines the characteristics of his prolific oeuvre in this early work. Through tight cinematic narration, he effectively conveys the sudden and shocking horror that develops over the course of the film.

$16.79 Edited into a beautifully photographed, moving film, even after five reels were confiscated by Saddam Hussein's government, this Iraqi/French collaboration is set just before the outbreak of war in 2003. In the southern region of Iraq where the Tigris river runs through marshland, an old man (Sami Kaftan) lives in a tiny hut thatched from reeds. He has a peaceful, simple life. He loves his wife dearly and in his prayers he is thankful for the life that they have shared together, explaining ...
