Guitarist and occasional Waller-ish vocalist Marty Grosz is joined here by a variety of small group backing, including Randy Reinhart - cornet, Jon-Erik Kellso - trumpet, Scott Robinson - C melody sax, clarinet, mezzaphone, bass sax, Dan Block - clarinet
For this unusual CD, guitar-singer Marty Grosz and a few overlapping all-star groups of small-group swing players perform a variety of songs that were recorded in the 1930s and '40s by the Ink Spots. Although Grosz takes vocals on many of the numbers, there is no attempt to imitate the popular vocal group. Grosz simply sings in his usual good-natured Fats Waller-inspired style. Since many of these songs are excellent swing standards, the combos (two quartets and one sextet) have no difficulty coming up with hot solos and riffs to uplift the tunes. Among the key solo stars are cornetist and trombonist Randy Reinhart, trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, and the reeds of Scott Robinson, Vince Giordano, and Dan Block. As is true of virtually all Marty Grosz's CDs, Chasin' the Spots is highly enjoyable and infectious. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Marty Grosz (vocals, guitar); Daniel Block (clarinet, alto saxophone); Scott Robinson (C-melody saxophone); Vince Giordano (bass saxophone, bass instrument); Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet); Randy Reinhart (cornet); Arnie Kinsella (drums).

| Marty Grosz Remembering Louis CD (2002)
Chasin' The Spots music CDs
$14.39 Although 14 of the 16 songs on this set were recorded by Louis Armstrong (he never got around to "How Am I to Know," which he did perform in 1930, while "In the Land of Beginning Again" was the closing theme song of Fate Marable's band when Armstrong was a sideman), there is no attempt to re-create Satch's solos or try vocalizing like him. Instead, this project just served as a good excuse for acoustic guitarist Marty Grosz (who surprisingly does not take any vocals), clarinetist Ken Peplowski, trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, and Vince Giordano (doubling on string bass and bass sax) to play some superior tunes that they loved from Armstrong's early days. The instrumentation is reminiscent of the Sidney Bechet/Muggsy Spanier quartet of 1940 and the ensembles have the same light feel. The musicians are all major players in the ...

$9.59 Marty Grosz is a fine guitar player and singer, and has earned a solid rep as a purveyor of classic jazz styles. He's joined on Marty Grosz and His Hot Combination by a number of other players associated with classic styles, including clarinetist Ken Peplowski and trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso. The main idea of the album, then, is fairly straightforward: surround yourself with great players, choose a handful of standards, and play your heart out. The collection begins with a ...
