(3 Customer Reviews)
GREATEST HYMNS collects highlights from Selah's first four studio albums, and provides an ideal introduction to this Contemporary Christian outfit. Selah merges traditional hymns with soulful R&B and world-music flavors (particularly the folk music of Africa, where two the trio's members grew up), and their sound is distinguished by bright, accessible pop arrangements and the rich vocals of singer Nicol Sponberg. Songs as seemingly diverse as "Bika Mona Ve (Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior)" and "Amazing Grace" represent Selah's smooth, genre-blending Christian pop on this excellent sampler.
Selah: Melodie Crittenden, Todd Smith , Nicol Sponberg (vocals); Jorgen Carlsson (guitar, bass guitar); Mark Pay, Bruce Watson (guitar); Pamela Sixfin, David Angell (violin); Kristin Wilkinson (viola); Sarighani Reist (cello); John Mock (whistle); Jim Brickman, Allan Hall (piano); Randy Melson (bass guitar); Erik Eldenious, Dane Clark (drums); David Grow, Eric Darken (percussion); Windy Wagner (background vocals).

| | Trick Pony R.I.D.E. CD (2005)
Greatest Hymns
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure ...

| | Ty Herndon Right About Now CD (2007)
Greatest Hymns
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound ...

| | Lil Wyte Phinally Phamous CD (2004) Chopped & Screwed
Greatest Hymns
$12.39 With "I Sho Will," the debut single off Memphis rapper Lil Wyte's second record, PHINALLY PHAMOUS, it's immediately apparent what instantly caught the eye of ace producers Juicy J and DJ Paul of the Three 6 Mafia family. With its insistent beat, its catch-phrase refrains, and its fast-paced, slang-twisting, layered lyrics, the song is an instant classic. On this track, the young MC declares himself the "Willie Nelson of the next generation" in an oddly observational tone; more than a tossed-off boast, it's a well-etched metaphor dropped in the middle of rapid-fire freestyling.
PHINALLY PHAMOUS is packed full of lyrics that compel the listener to do a double take, rewind, and nod at the deftness of a well-turned phrase. Further, Lil Wyte is aided by the expert production of the aforementioned Juicy J and DJ Paul. This musical marriage comes to fullest fruition on the unrepentant "I Did 'Em Wrong," where Lil Wyte rarely pauses as he spits out rhyme after rhyme, while a unique blend of bass, synth, and video-game sound bites flutter around him. Here Lil Wyte is a rapper on the rise and, with its unwavering energy, PHINALLY PHAMOUS portends to make him just that.
With a rapid mouth and an attitude that's straight-up crunk, Lil Wyte came out of nowhere, landed his "My Smoking Song" on every Southern mixtape that mattered, and ended up one of the flagship artists on the revitalized Asylum label. Not bad, and while mainstream rap fans won't find much to holler about here, crunk fans with ...
