Audio Mixer: Dominic Camardella. Recording information: The Plant Recording Studios, Sausalito, CA. Photographer: Janis Wilkins. Arrangers: Christian Jacob; Andy Narell; Marcos Silva; Diana Moreira Booker; Krishna Booker. Throughout Flora's Song, the veteran Brazilian singer Flora Purim is heard in prime form. The ten compositions fit her style well; she swings in her own fashion and puts plenty of feeling into her vocals. In addition, there are many fine solos along the way, with the standouts including Harvey Wainapel's flute solo on "Flora's Song" and the steel drums of Andy Narrell on "E Precisa Perdoar" and "Forbidden Love." Whether any of the songs eventually become standards is open to question, but they are welcome additions to Flora Purim's repertoire. This is her most rewarding recording in several years, and she sounds quite happy throughout the excellent set. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.102) - "[With] a hazy grandeur, and earthy exuberance....It's clear the Queen of Brazilian has a fever, and it's catching." $7.99 | | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
Flora's Song
$14.38 2009 release from legendary British Rock icon Ray Davies, who returns with all your favorite Kinks songs backed by the spectacular Crouch End Festival Chorus. Singer/songwriter Davies fronted The Kinks from their inception in the '60s until their dissolution three decades later in the early '90s (although there have been hints of a reunion in recent years). This must-have album includes brand new renditions of 15 Kinks klassics including `Waterloo Sunset', `You Really Got Me', `All Day and All of the Night, `Shangri-La', `Victoria' and many more phenomenal tunes. Decca.
Photographer: Sam Seager. Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance ...
| | Dave Brubeck Time Out CD (1959) Remastered
Flora's Song
$6.25 Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Eugene Wright (bass); Joe Morello (drums). Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York on June 25, July 1 & August 18, 1959. Includes liner notes by Dave Brubeck and Steve Race. Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon. The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano ...

| | Very Best Of Bert Kaempfert CD (1995)
Flora's Song
$14.35 16 of greatest hits from the first producer of the Beatles, had over 40 albums on Decca & MCA in the '60s & '70s, inc. many tunes that he wrote; all tracks on this disc appear for the first time on CD
Producer: Milt Gabler. Reissue producer: Eliot Goshman. Recorded between 1960 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian. Digitally remastered by Eliot Goshman (1995, Taragon Studios, Deer Park, New York). Liner Note Author: Steve Kolanjian. Recording information: 07/07/1960-05/02/1967. Bert Kaempfert may have signed and lost the Beatles, but this CD is a reminder that he never lacked for hit records of his own, and had his own influence on popular culture around the world. The Very Best of Bert Kaempfert isn't quite a comprehensive collection of Kaempfert's hits, but it will have special resonances to listeners of a certain age group, and it covers a few bases that would be missed by a strict adherence to chart placements. In addition to the expected hits such as "Wonderland by Night," "Three O'Clock in the Morning," "Spanish Eye (Moon Over Naples)," "Danke Schon," and "Red Roses for a Blue Lady," the producers have included ...
